Pre-Trip Essential: What to Prepare for Seoul itinerary
Travel Requirements: All travelers to South Korea must complete the E-Arrival Card online at least 72 hours prior to boarding their flight, except for Korean citizens and valid residence card holders. Check from the K-ETA Official Website: https://www.k-eta.go.kr/ or mobile app.
Navigation: Google Maps is not usable in South Korea. Instead, travelers are advised to use local mapping apps such as Kakao Maps or NAVER Maps for navigation.
Connectivity: South Korea offers free public WiFi in certain areas, but it’s essential to have reliable WiFi connectivity. We recommend using South Korea eSIM from Klook, which is very convenient.
From the Airport to Seoul Downtown Area: As of January 20, 2022, public transportation from Incheon International Airport to your accommodation in Korea is not permitted. Please plan your transportation options from the airport to Seoul city.

Getting Around in Seoul
When visiting Seoul, subway trains and buses are efficient for getting around. Since Google Maps does not work in South Korea, be sure to download NAVER Map for directions.
- Getting around in Seoul using public transport is easy if you have a local transport card, known as T-money, which you can use to pay for taxis and purchases as well. You can buy this card from any convenience store in Korea for ₩5,000.
- If you plan to drive in Seoul, ensure you have an international driver’s permit and a valid local driver’s license. We also recommend reserving your Car Rental from Booking.com before your arrival to ensure availability.
- Take a Seoul City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Bus to explore the top attractions at your own pace. The bus follows a designated route that connects major tourist destinations. You can purchase Seoul Signseeing Tour Ticket in advance from Klook online to save time and potentially enjoy discounts.
Accommodation in Seoul
When visiting Seoul, travelers have a wide range of accommodation options to suit their needs. While finding a hotel or Airbnb is relatively straightforward, planning ahead can help you secure a great place to stay. It’s advisable to choose accommodations that are close to the attractions you want to visit in order to minimize commuting time.
Based on our experience, Myeong-dong is the best area to stay for tourists and first-time visitors:
Myeongdong: Located in the heart of Seoul’s city center, Myeongdong is one of the most popular and convenient places for first-time travelers. All major tour buses, airport shuttles, and day trip tours from Seoul have a main pickup stop in Myeongdong. Its central location makes it easy to access all the major attractions.
- Lotte Hotel Seoul (Top-Range) – Its location is ideal for sightseeing and accessing local attractions. The area also boasts numerous excellent restaurants, tea houses, and cafes.
- LOTTE City Hotel Myeongdong (High-Range) is an excellent choice in this area, as it is within walking distance of shopping districts, street food, and public transportation.
- Hotel28 Myeongdong (Mid-Range) is located in the Myeongdong area. This cinematic theme boutique hotel was very convenient and well-connected to public transport, with plenty of nearby dining options.
Seoul Travel Tips: Popular rooms in Seoul tend to fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so be sure to book early to avoid them being fully booked! Seoul is filled with an abundance of activities and attractions, making it nearly impossible to experience everything the city has to offer in just a few days. To help first-time visitors, here sharing the classic 5 to 7-day Seoul itinerary. Feel free to adjust it based on your personal interests.
Planning for 5 to 7 Days Seoul itinerary:
- Day 1: Arriving in Seoul. Explore nearby Neighbourhoods – Dongdaemun and Dongdaemun.
- Day 2: Seoul’s Historical And Cultural – Gwanghwamun Square, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village.
- Day 3: Seoul’s Iconic Attractions – N Seoul Tower, Starfield Library, COEX Aquarium.
- Day 4: Cheong Wa Dae (Blue House Korea) and Seoul Battleship Park. Food hunting in Seoul Night Market.

Day 1: Arriving in Seoul. Explore nearby Neighbourhoods
On the first day of our Seoul itinerary, we focused on our arrival in the city and checking into our hotel. After landing at Incheon International Airport, we headed straight to our accommodation – Hotel28 Myeongdong and take some rest. We didn’t plan many activities for that day; instead, we leisurely explored the nearby neighborhood of Myeongdong, where we enjoyed some local food.
At night, we visited Dongdaemun to see the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). If you arrive in Seoul early, you could also start your sightseeing by visiting some attractions.
Myeong-dong (명동)
Myeongdong (명동) is one of the best places in Seoul for K-beauty, fashion, and shopping. We really enjoyed our shopping experience there. Besides, Myeongdong is filled with skincare and makeup stores, trendy clothing shops, and street food stalls, all within one vibrant district.
Make sure to try a snack while you shop! The street food scene in Myeongdong is as famous as its shopping, offering delicious bites.
Since we were staying in the Myeong-dong area, we just walked to the bustling district and wandered around. If you are staying in another area, take the subway; it is very convenient to get to Myeong-dong.
Getting There: Myeong-dong Station.
Dongdaemun (동대문)
As night falls, take a trip to Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) (동대문디자인플라자) and immerse yourself in a futuristic world as the lights illuminate the space. This stunning building, designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, is famous for hosting various exhibitions, fashion shows, and serving as a location for K-dramas.
Getting There: Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, Exit 1.
Day 2: Seoul’s Historical And Cultural
For Day 2 of Seoul itinerary, we will focus on exploring the country’s rich history. Although Seoul is known for being a trend-setting city, its historical significance is always apparent. There are five famous royal palaces in Seoul located in close proximity to one another: Gyeongbokgung (경복궁/景福宫), Changdeokgung (창덕궁/昌德宫), Changgyeonggung (창경궁/昌慶宮), Deoksugung (덕수궁/德壽宮), and Gyeonghuigung (경희궁/慶熙宮).
Among these, Gyeongbokgung Palace is often regarded as the most beautiful and is the largest of the five. However, unless you have a lot of stamina, I recommend against trying to visit all of them in a single day, as it involves a considerable amount of walking. Attempting to see them all may prevent you from fully appreciating each experience by the end of the day. Here’s what we suggest.
Famous Statues at Gwanghwamun Square (광화문 광장)
Firstly, make a quick stop at Gwanghwamun Square (광화문 광장) to see the impressive golden statue of King Sejong. Visiting the Statue of King Sejong can easily be combined with other nearby attractions for a full day of sightseeing. The statue is located about two blocks north of Seoul City Hall in an open pedestrian square.
King Sejong is best known as the inventor of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. With the beautiful backdrop of the mountains and the nearby Gyeongbokgung Palace, this is a stunning sight.
Another attraction you definitely shouldn’t miss is the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. He is revered as a naval war hero in Korea, known for inventing the Turtle Ships and for his significant victories against the Japanese during the Imjin Wars.
We took several photos at this location before moving on with our itinerary for the day in Seoul.
Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁)
Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁/景福宫) truly deserves its reputation as Seoul’s premier historical attraction. The attraction should be at the top of every first-time visitor’s Seoul itinerary. As the largest and most visited of the five royal palaces in Seoul, it showcases the rich history of the single-dynasty Korean royalty that ruled for over 800 years. This iconic site is a must-visit while in Seoul!
The entrance fee is quite affordable. Travelers can purchase a royal temple pass for ₩36,000, which grants access to other palaces and important sites in Seoul. Seniors can enter for free by providing proof of age.
Founded in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace has undergone several reconstructions, with a significant restoration completed in the 1990s that returned it to its former glory. As the main residence of the Joseon dynasty, this historic landmark offers a captivating glimpse into Korea’s rich history and culture.
The buildings are surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens, and visitors can explore some of the structures inside. The scenery at Gyeongbokgung Palace is beautiful, and the grounds are expansive, so be prepared for some walking.
Traditional Hanbok Experience in Seoul
One of the highlights of visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace is the opportunity to wear a Hanbok, the traditional Korean attire. The sight of people walking through the palace grounds in these beautiful garments adds to the enchanting atmosphere.
If you’re interested, you can rent Hanboks from nearby shops, as taking family photos in these outfits on the palace grounds is a popular tradition. Additionally, visitors wearing Hanboks receive free admission to the palace!
Seoul Travel Tips: Try the Hanbok Experience with Hanbok Rental near Gyeongbokgung Palace.
The Changing of the Royal Guard Ceremony
The Changing of the Royal Guard Ceremony takes place at the plaza near Gwanghwamun Gate at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, lasting for about 20 minutes. Additionally, there is a Gatekeeper Military Training session near Hyeopsaengmun Gate at 9:35 AM. Both reenactments are enjoyable to watch.
Overall, Gyeongbokgung Palace is definitely worth a visit. It’s a good idea to allocate around two to three hours for your visit, although we spent over three hours exploring the area. It can become crowded, so I recommend arriving early. There’s also a museum of Korean history located right next door.
Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁)
Address: 161 Sajik-ro, Jongno District, Seoul.
Opening hours: Daily from 9:00 to 18:00 (Closed on Tuesdays).
Entrance fee: ₩3,000 (Free with the Discover Seoul Pass or for those wearing a Hanbok).
Getting there: Gyeongbokgung Station, Exit 4.
Bukchon Hanok Village
Your next stop on your Seoul itinerary is Bukchon Hanok Village, which is about a half-hour walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace.
Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) is home to hundreds of traditional Korean houses known as hanok. This popular attraction features beautifully restored houses that date back to the Joseon era, all tightly packed together on the slope of a small hill.
Walking around Bukchon Hanok Village offers a unique experience. These Hanok have stood since the Joseon Dynasty, creating a sense of stepping back in time. The narrow alleys are charming, and everywhere you look, there’s something beautiful to photograph, such as the tiled roofs and wooden windows. You can also discover hidden gems like art galleries, tea houses, cozy cafés, and workshops, allowing you to immerse yourself in the culture. It truly feels like you are walking through Korean history.
In summary, if you want to experience traditional Korea in the heart of Seoul, Bukchon Hanok Village is a must-visit. Please remember that Bukchon is also a residential neighborhood, and people live here. Be respectful of their space as you explore.

Address: Gyedong-gil, Jongno District, Seoul.

Getting there: It’s about a 30-minute walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace. Alternatively, you can take the subway to Anguk Station and walk for 10 minutes.
Day 3: Seoul’s Iconic Attraction
N Seoul Tower (N서울타워)
If you’re in Seoul, the N Seoul Tower is a must-see landmark that captures the city’s vibrant spirit and stunning skyline.
Officially known as the Namsan Seoul Tower, and also referred to as Namsan Tower, it is a communication and observation tower located at the summit of Namsan Mountain, which stands at 262 meters (860 feet) in central Seoul. The tower itself is 236 meters tall (774 feet), making it the second highest point in the city.
Visitors can reach the N Seoul Tower by taking a cable car (for a fee), by bus, or by hike up the Namsan Park. One of my favorite experiences was taking the cable car to the tower, enjoying the scenic journey that provided glimpses of Seoul’s lush greenery and bustling streets below.
Once at the top, we were greeted by a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Seoul. The view was absolutely fantastic. If you visit at night, the tower is beautifully illuminated, making it even more stunning.

Beyond the views, there’s plenty to do! Don’t miss the famous “Locks of Love” section, which is a sight to behold. Many couples visit to attach love locks, with thousands of padlocks in every imaginable color. Each lock is inscribed with heartfelt messages, symbolizing the couples’ bond. There are also delightful cafes where you can relax with a coffee, unique souvenir shops for charming mementos, and a fine dining experience at the revolving restaurant for a truly special occasion.
N Seoul Tower (N서울타워) – Observatory
Entrance fee: ₩26,000 (Free with the Discover Seoul Pass).
Opening hours: Daily from 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM on weekdays, and until 11:00 PM on weekends.
Ticket: Get the N Seoul Tower Observatory Ticket from Klook. Package options available!
Namsan Cable Car
Fee: ₩12,000 for one-way ticket, ₩15,000 for a round trip.
Operating hours: From 10:00 to 23:00.
Getting there:
By Cable Car: From Myeong-dong Station, walk approximately 10-15 minutes to the cable car station.
By Bus: From Chungmuro Station, use Exit 2 and take the Namsan Sunhwan Shuttle Bus (No. 01A or 01B).
COEX Aquarium (코엑스 아쿠아리움)
Next, we headed to Gangnam. Starfield COEX Mall is famous for its Instagrammable Starfield Library and the popular COEX Aquarium. Both places are located in the Gangnam district of Seoul.
Visiting Starfield COEX Mall is a truly unique experience!
The COEX Aquarium (코엑스 아쿠아리움) features a large aquarium that houses around 20,000 sea creatures, including sharks, rays, turtles, and many more. It’s a fantastic destination for children and adults alike. As someone who loves the ocean, visiting the Coex Aquarium in Seoul was a delightful experience.
From the moment I entered, I was transported into a captivating underwater world filled with diverse marine life. The aquarium is well-designed, guiding visitors through different themed areas that showcase various aquatic ecosystems. From vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful tropical fish to anemone forests inhabited by elegant rays, each display is immersive and enchanting.
Plan to spend about 60 to 90 minutes exploring the COEX Aquarium.

Starfield Library (별마당도서관)
The Startfield Library (별마당도서관) features two enormous two-story bookshelves filled with over 50,000 books and 400 types of magazines, reaching from floor to ceiling. It’s a popular spot for Instagrammers and TikTokers, and seeing it in person was remarkable
The impressive height of the shelves is something you have to experience firsthand! It becomes even more beautiful when the lights illuminate the night.
What I particularly like about Starfield COEX Library is the comfortable reading atmosphere and the numerous cozy seating areas scattered throughout, perfect for spending time. Once you’re finished enjoying the library, it’s time to explore the rest of the mall.

Day 4: Visit Cheong Wa Dae and Seoul Battleship Park
Cheong Wa Dae (청와대)
One of the interesting places we included in our Seoul itinerary is Cheong Wa Dae (청와대/青瓦台), also known as the Blue House. It serves as the South Korean equivalent of the White House in the U.S. and was the official office and residence of Korean Presidents from 1948 to 2022. This significant building symbolizes Korean history and politics, allowing visitors to experience the country’s political culture in a unique way. It’s especially intriguing for those interested in politics or aiming to understand Korean culture.
The former presidential residence can only be viewed from the outside. You can peek through the windows to get a glimpse of how the residents lived. The Main Office Building is a large structure where the president worked and met with foreign guests. Inside, you’ll find exhibits showcasing state visits, received gifts, and more.
The gardens and grounds are also beautiful, making for a pleasant walking experience. The entire complex is quite expansive, so it’s advisable to allocate at least an hour to explore all the areas thoroughly.
Cheong Wa Dae is located in the Jongno District of Seoul, right behind Gyeongbokgung Palace. You can easily combine visits to both locations in your Seoul itinerary. We adjusted our schedule to suit our online appointment.
Cheong Wa Dae Tour Reservation
Visitors can tour Cheong Wa Dae for free by making an online appointment up to four weeks in advance, or they can apply in person on-site, as there are 2,000 slots available for on-site visitors each day. There are no guided tours; instead, guests are invited to explore the area at their own pace.
Cheong Wa Dae (청와대)
Address: 1, Cheongwadae-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Opening hours: From 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:30). Subject to change. Closed on Tuesday.
Entrance fee: Free with entry required appointment online or via on-site application.
Getting there: Gyeongbokgung Station (line 3, exit 4). 15 mins walk.
Seoul Battleship Park (서울함공원)
Seoul Battleship Park (서울함공원) is another popular attraction in Seoul. Located in Mangwon Hangang Park, this exhibition area allows visitors to explore Korea’s naval history while admiring warships that have been perfectly preserved in their original condition, docked along the Hangang riverfront.
The Seoul Battleship Park features three retired ships, including the Chamsuri, a submarine, and the Seoul Ship – a 1,900-ton vessel from the Korean navy. It’s a great place to spend time watching the ships and submarines.
Access to the outdoor area is free, but there is an entrance fee to enter the exhibition hall.
Seoul Battleship Park (서울함공원)
Address: 407, Maponaru-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul.
Opening hours: 10:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 during Summer (March – October). 10:00 to 17:00 during Winter (November – February). Closed on Mondays.
Entrance fee: ₩3,000 (Free with the Discover Seoul Pass).
Getting there: From Mangwon Station bus stop, take Mapo Bus No. 09 and alight at Hangang Park Entrance.
Food Hunting in Seoul Night Market
Don’t miss the chance to visit one or more night markets in Seoul. The city boasts several vibrant night markets, and we highly recommend experiencing at least one for local food and to immerse yourself in the local vibe. Since we were staying in Seoul for a few nights, we decided to explore the night markets at various times. We visited different night markets to hang out and try a variety of street food. It was fun and lively!
You can choose one or two Seoul Night Markets to explore based on your Seoul itinerary. This is definitely a must-do in Seoul.
Myeongdong Night Market is located in a commercial district with malls and is easily accessible. It’s a popular choice for street food and shopping. While it’s fun to explore, it can feel quite touristy and is often crowded. The prices for street food may not be the best, but the experience is enjoyable.
Gwangjang Market has a lively nighttime atmosphere, especially for street food. Although some may find the food overpriced and overrated, it remains a great experience for tourists.
Dongdaemun Market is located further east of Gwangjang and covers a much larger area. It’s known for fashion shopping and vibrant nightlife, with a focus on clothing and accessories.
Namdaemun Market offers a more traditional outdoor market experience, featuring a wider variety of items alongside some street food. Here, you can explore many traditional local foods and snacks.
Day 5: Day Trip to Gapyeong – Nami Island
A day trip to Gapyeong is highly recommended for your Seoul itinerary. During your visit, you can explore the popular Nami Island and visit nearby attractions like the Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원), the colorful European-style buildings of Petite France (쁘띠프랑스), and the Gapyeong or Gangchon Rail Bike Park.
If planned well, you can cover all these attractions in a single day, although it may feel a bit rushed. Alternatively, you can book Nami Island day tours, which include round-trip transportation from Seoul, entrance fees, and inter-location transport via a private shuttle bus.

Seoul Travel Tips: The best time to visit Nami Island is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). We visited Nami Island twice during my previous trip to South Korea, and each season offered a different vibe. We prefer autumn over winter because the weather is pleasant, allowing us to fully enjoy the scenery.
Nami Island
Nami Island (남이섬) is a beautiful and unique destination, perfect for those looking to experience the charm of the Korean countryside. It is a popular location for wedding photos and K-drama filming, including famous series like “Winter Sonata” (2002) and “My Love from the Star” (2014), thanks to its stunning scenery.
Visitors can also enjoy a variety of activities, such as biking, performances, and cozy cafes for relaxation. To fully explore the area, plan to spend at least half a day there.
You can reach Nami Island in the following ways:
- By Metro or ITX Express: The journey takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.
- By Direct Bus: Take a direct bus from Seoul to Nami Island. It’s advisable to make a reservation in advance. You can book your shuttle bus to Nami Island from Seoul through Klook.

Petite France
Next, visit Petite France, a French cultural theme park inspired by the beloved fairy tale character, the Little Prince. This area is adorned with European-style buildings, vibrant houses, century-old dolls and puppets, as well as various antiques and furniture.
Rail Bike Park
Finally, experience the scenic Rail Bike Paths, which offer a unique biking adventure along an old railway, providing beautiful views of the Bukhan River throughout the journey. You can choose between Gapyeong Rail Park (가평 레일파크) and Gangchon Rail Park (강촌 레일파크). Gangchon Rail Park is the more popular option, offering better views and themed tunnels. However, if you’re short on time, Gapyeong Rail Park is a more convenient choice.
Day 6: Seoul’s Theme Park / DMZ / Seoraksan National Park
Depending on your interests and travel companions, you can easily customize your Day 6 itinerary in Seoul. Here are a few recommendations:
- If you are traveling with family and kids, consider spending the day at a Seoul theme park, such as Everland or Lotte World.
- For history enthusiasts, we recommend visiting the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone); this experience is sure to be one of the most unique in Korea.
- If you love nature, you might enjoy a trip to Seoraksan National Park.
Feel free to choose the option that best suits your group’s interests!
Seoul’s Theme Park: Everland (에버랜드)
For a fun-filled day with family or friends, visit Everland (에버랜드), Korea’s largest amusement park. The popular Everland offers thrilling roller coasters, beautiful gardens, and a zoo. With various themed attractions and seasonal events, it’s an ideal day trip for those looking to unwind and enjoy some adventure.
Keep in mind that the location is quite a distance from the city, so plan for around two hours of travel time. Alternatively, you can book a round-trip shuttle bus through Klook to alleviate any transportation concerns!
Everland (에버랜드)
Opening hours: Daily from 10:00 to 22:00.
Admission fee: Adult ₩54,000 and child ₩43,000 (Free with the Discover Seoul Pass – 72/120-Hour).
Purchase Ticket: Get the Everland Seoul Ticket from Klook. Package with transportation options to choose from.
Seoul’s Theme Park: Lotte World (롯데월드 어드벤처)
Lotte World Seoul is a popular theme park located in Seoul, conveniently accessible by subway. It features both an indoor and an outdoor theme park, offering a wide range of rides for thrill-seekers as well as attractions designed for children. Additionally, there are interactive rides that enhance the overall experience. I highly recommend it for families visiting Seoul.
However, due to its popularity among both locals and tourists, the park can become quite crowded, with wait times sometimes exceeding an hour or more.

DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)
Visiting the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Korea. This border area between North and South Korea offers a rare opportunity to glimpse into North Korea, making it a fascinating destination for the curious traveler. Additionally, the DMZ is home to stunning, untouched natural landscapes. Access to the DMZ is limited; you can only visit with an organized tour.
We recommend the DMZ Tour from Klook, which is the best option for covering all major sites in and around the DMZ. The tour includes roundtrip transportation from Seoul and admission to all museums. The guides are knowledgeable and provide insightful information about the Korean War and each site. We highly recommend this tour.

Seoraksan National Park
Seoraksan National Park is one of the most breathtaking places in South Korea. The park features stunning forests, picturesque trails, and magnificent natural scenery. Each season transforms the landscape: autumn brings fiery red and golden leaves, spring erupts with cherry blossoms, and winter blankets the area in a serene snowy wonderland.
Seoraksan National Park offers a variety of experiences for visitors of all kinds. What stands out is the attention given to the facilities. There are easy hikes to the Sinheungsa Temple, which can also be accessed by cable car, as well as numerous hiking trails. Some of these trails are challenging and designed for experienced hikers. Keep in mind that visiting this attraction requires a good amount of walking and climbing.
Day 7: Seoul Downtown – Myeongdong, Hongdae, Insadong
Spend the day shopping or catching up on things you might have missed in the neighborhoods of Seoul. Some of our favorite shopping spots include Myeongdong for skincare and makeup, Hongdae for trendy clothing, and Insadong for traditional souvenirs. We concluded our trip with a delicious Korea brunch before heading to the airport to return to our home country.
