Jia Jia Tang Bao is one of the best Xiao Long Bao that you can find in Shanghai. It is popular among both locals and travelers.
Shanghai is renowned for its xiao long bao (XLB), also known as steamed soup dumplings. Many shops and restaurants offer this popular dish, and Jia Jia Tang Bao is highly rated among them. These delightful dumplings are filled with fresh meat and flavored broth, all wrapped in thin dumpling skins. When paired with a ginger-vinegar dip, you will fall in love with the delicious broth that oozes out when you bite into the steaming bun.
During my Shanghai trip, we visited the popular Jia Jia Tang Bao (佳家汤包), specifically for their xiao long bao. The food is good, and it did not disappoint. Continue reading for my review of Jia Jia Tang Bao’s Shanghai xiao long bao.
Jia Jia Tang Bao Shanghai

Although it may not be the traditional name associated with Shanghai, Jia Jia Tang Bao (佳家汤包) has been serving customers for nearly 40 years. It has gained popularity for its diverse selection of soup dumplings, known as Xiao Long Bao. Among the most popular options are the crab roe Xiao Long Bao, crab mixed with fresh meat, and the classic fresh meat Xiao Long Bao.
Jia Jia Tang Bao is a short walk from the People’s Square Park Subway (nearest exit 8) and is located near the well-known Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World. It can be found on Huanghe Road, a street famous for its array of food options. While you’re there, you can also enjoy sheng jian bao from Yang’s Fried Dumplings and the renowned Butterfly Pastry at Park Hotel Deli.

Our Food Visit to Jia Jia Tang Bao

We went to Jia Jia Tang Bao for breakfast. The shop was located just a short walk from our hotel – Shanghai Elong Hotel.
We arrived at the restaurant at 9:00 AM and found a small queue in front. The space is tight, but the turnover is quite fast since everyone is there for the dumplings. After finishing their meals, diners typically leave to make room for those waiting for seats. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated.
Inside, the restaurant can feel a bit cramped and basic. You may have to share a table with other diners, which adds to the lively atmosphere.
Jia Jia Tang Bao Menu

Jia Jia Tang Bao offers a variety of xiao long bao on their menu. In addition to their signature xiao long bao, they also provide wontons, noodles, and soups. As is common in many Chinese restaurants, ordering is done via a QR code. If you can’t read Mandarin, there is a limited English menu with photos to assist foreigners who may struggle with Chinese characters.
We ordered the popular XLB: fresh pork soup dumplings, pork mixed with crab meat dumplings. Please note that shredded ginger is an additional cost, just like in other restaurants.
If you’re dining solo and want to sample all the different kinds of xiao long bao, you can order their “Family Portrait” (全家福) set. This set includes their popular soup dumplings: Fresh Meat, Crab mixed with Fresh Meat, and Shiitake Mushrooms mixed with Fresh Meat.
Jia Jia Tang Bao Food Tips: If you visit Jia Jia Tang Bao later in the afternoon, you may find that the xiaolongbao options are limited to just one or two varieties. For a better selection, try to go before 11 AM or earlier.
What To Eat at Jia Jia Tang Bao

The XLB (xiao long bao) takes about 15 minutes to be served and come steaming hot. Each basket contains 12 pieces of soup dumplings.
Make sure to get a dish of vinegar, and chili oil if you enjoy a bit of spice. Grab your chopsticks and dig in!
Start by biting a small hole in the paper-thin skin of the xiao long bao and carefully sip the hot juices from the dumpling. Then, dip the remaining dumpling into the vinegar and pop it into your mouth to enjoy the explosion of flavors. Just be careful, as the dumpling can be very hot!
Piping Hot Xiao Long Bao

The xiao long bao from Jia Jia Tang Bao are excellent.
Among all the XLB I’ve tried, I personally think the best is the classic fresh meat soup dumpling, which perfectly complements the freshness of the meat and matches well with the broth. However, I found the crab and meat versions here didn’t suit my taste.
Noodles Dish

We also ordered their noodle dish: Scallion Oil Noodles (cong you ban mian, 葱油拌面). Surprisingly, this noodle dish was also highly rated among everything we tried at Jia Jia Tang Bao.
Overall: Jia Jia Tang Bao for the best Shanghai XLB?
All in all, Jia Jia Tang Bao Shanghai comes highly recommended if you’re looking for the best soup dumplings in the city. The xiao long bao here are great, and the noodles are spectacular. I particularly enjoyed their fresh meat dumplings because they were so juicy and flavorful.
But do I think Jia Jia Tang Bao deserves the title of the best xiao long bao in Shanghai? While I believe their xiao long bao is indeed very good, it might not be the best based on my taste. I would prefer Lai Lai Xiao Long after trying various shops. Nonetheless, Jia Jia Tang Bao is definitely worth a visit for a taste of Shanghai!
