Here is a detailed Wuzhen itinerary and travel tips for this charming Water Town to help you plan your trip.
Wuzhen Water Town (Chinese: 乌镇水乡) is a hidden gem that is definitely worth a visit. Established over 1,300 years ago, it ranks among the top six ancient towns in the southern region of the Yangtze River. Wuzhen is incredibly authentic and steeped in history, offering stunning views and a memorable experience. Despite being a popular tourist destination, it possesses a unique charm that makes it feel poetic. Every corner presents an excellent photo opportunity.
We visited Wuzhen as part of our trip to Shanghai during our three-day journey to Hangzhou. Travel back in time with me as we will share our travel experience exploring this enchanting town.
How To Get to Wuzhen from Hangzhou
Hangzhou is the closest city to Wuzhen, and most travelers opt to travel from Hangzhou to Wuzhen when planning for Wuzhen itinerary. Here are a few options for getting to and from Wuzhen. Please note that there is no direct train service connecting the two locations. Choose the option that best fits your schedule and preferences for a smooth trip to Wuzhen!
By Bus: There are two bus options from Hangzhou to Wuzhen.
- From Hangzhou Jiubao Bus Station (九堡客运中心) to Wuzhen Water Town Bus Station: Buses depart daily starting at 7 AM, with a frequency of approximately every 20 minutes. The one-way ticket costs CNY 32, and the journey takes about 2 hours. However, you will need to transfer to reach the Scenic Zone. You can either take a 5-minute bus ride from Wuzhen Water Town Bus Station to the Scenic Zone or walk for 20 minutes.
- From Hangzhoucheng Bus Center (杭州城站客运站) to Wuzhen Water Town Scenic Zone: Buses depart daily at 7:30 AM, with a frequency of every 30 minutes. The one-way ticket costs CNY 31, and the journey takes around 1.5 hours. This bus goes directly to the Scenic Zone, so no transfer is needed.

By Train + Bus: There is no direct train from Hangzhou to Wuzhen Water Town. Travelers need to take a high-speed train from Hangzhou East Station (杭州东站) to Tongxiang Station (桐乡站) and then transfer to public buses K282 or K231 near Tongxiang Station to reach Wuzhen Water Town Scenic Area. The transportation cost is approximately CNY 25, and the total travel time is around 70 minutes, depending on the transfer time. Alternatively, you can use a ride-hailing service or take a taxi from Tongxiang Station to the scenic area, with fares generally around CNY100.
By Taxi / ride hailing Didi: Some travelers prefer to take a taxi or hire a Didi for a hassle-free journey directly from Hangzhou to Wuzhen Water Town. This option takes about 1.5 hours, and a one-way trip usually costs more than CNY300, including toll fees.
Wuzhen Water Town Entrance Ticket
Wuzhen Water Town is divided into four quadrants: East, South, West, and North. The South and North quadrants serve as living quarters for locals and not for visit. The East quadrant and West quadrant are Wuzhen scenic areas to visit and require a separate entrance fee.
East quadrants (东栅, Dongzha) charges an entrance fee of CNY110 per person, while the West quadrants (西栅, Xizha) charges CNY150 per person. There is also a combined ticket for both the East and West quadrants available for CNY190, but this ticket must be used on the same day.
Wuzhen Ancient Water Town Scenic Area:
- Opening hours: Daily from 7:00 to 22:00
- Admission fee: Dongzha at CNY110 and Xizha at CNY 150. Combo Ticket at CNY190.

How to Plan Your Wuzhen itinerary
Wuzhen is a vast area, so it’s recommended to set aside at least one full day to explore each quadrant of the Wuzhen Scenic Area.
The East quadrant (Dongzha) is known for its rustic charm and vibrant cultural performances, highlighting various traditional folk customs. Although it may less spectacular, it has a unique and appealing character. In contrast, the West quadrant (Xizha) boasts a vibrant atmosphere that blends ancient and modern elements. It is bustling with numerous shops and restaurants, and guests have the option to stay on-site.
If you plan to visit both the East quadrant and West quadrant in one day, it’s best to start early. Begin your visit at the East Gate and end at the West Gate, as the West Gate features a nighttime light show.
Please note that the entrance ticket allows for only one admission to each quadrant, so it’s important to manage your time wisely.
What To do for Wuzhen itinerary
During our trip, we chose to explore the West Gate (XiZha) for a more relaxing experience.
Wuzhen Water Town is a picturesque place, rich in history and full of remarkable attractions. There isn’t much you can plan for your Wuzhen itinerary. What you need to do is simply stroll along the ancient water town and relax.
Strong Along the Ancient Water Town
Wuzhen village features traditional buildings, charming houses, and stone-paved streets that meander throughout the town. The small bridges connecting the streets along the river, along with the houses on the banks and the alleyways, give Wuzhen Water Town a nostalgic charm. The walk along the bridges and cobblestone paths is quite interesting.
The town seamlessly blends modern and traditional elements. Modern buildings such as the grand theater and the art museum sit alongside the village without clashing. This combination of contemporary and traditional architecture creates a unique atmosphere that enchants visitors.
Photography packages are widely available for travelers who want to wear traditional Chinese clothing and pose in the ancient water town. Many shops offer clothing rentals and photo packages for social media posts. While it’s not my personal preference, this can create great memories for those who enjoy photography. Every corner presents a photo opportunity.
Visit the Sights
We didn’t plan out which must-visit sights to see. Instead, we wandered through the scenic area, exploring the streets at our own pace. In the area, there’s a small collection of museums and exhibits showcasing old mansions and traditional lifestyles.
You can also participate in a class to learn how to make printing cloth using traditional methods. Additionally, there are workshops for printing designs on fabric, offering a glimpse into past lifestyles.
Notable places to visit in Wuzhen Scenic Area (Xizha) include the Xuchang Sauce Garden (叙昌酱园), Wuzhen Dyeing Workshop (草木本染坊), Three-Inch Golden Lotus Museum (三寸金莲博物馆), the Wuzhen Old Post Office (乌镇老邮局), and the White Lotus Pagoda (白莲塔寺).
There are many great sightseeing spots along the riverside of the canal, where you can easily spend hours exploring. You’ll also find small shops offering a variety of art pieces, clothing, souvenirs, and handmade crafts. Take your time to relax and wander around the Wuzhen Scenic Area.
Take Boat Ride
Don’t forget to take a hand-rowed boat ride along the canals. The boat ride experience is simply dreamy! This is especially true in the evening when everything is illuminated, creating breathtaking and memorable scenery.
A boat ride costs CNY 65 per person at Xizha. The boats are shared, accommodating a maximum of eight people. The ride will take you from one end of the town to the other. Be prepared for a long queue during peak times. Private boat tours are also available.
During our Wuzhen trip visit, we took a boat ride through the picturesque canals at night. It was truly amazing!
Try Wuzhen Local Cuisine
Don’t miss the opportunity to savor delicious traditional dishes and delicacies in Wuzhen. There is a wide variety of culinary choices and street food options available for you to enjoy during your visit.
As we wandered along the cobblestone paths, we encountered a range of local delicacies. The selection was impressive, featuring everything from deep-fried shredded radish pancakes to dingsheng cakes. We thoroughly enjoyed sampling both these small treats and full meals at sit-down restaurants. Our time in Wuzhen turned out to be a true culinary feast.

Staying in Wuzhen Scenic Area
You can easily do a day trip from Shanghai or Hangzhou, but I would recommend staying for one night in either the West Gate (XiZha) or East Gate (DongZha). At night, Wuzhen transforms into a beautifully lit scene.
Spending one night in the scenic area allows you to fully enjoy the tranquil environment. It also provides excellent photo opportunities in the evening and early morning, once the day-trippers have left.
We had a lovely one-night stay at the Wuzhen Guesthouse. Our room was located in Block 60 within the Wuzhen West Scenic Area. The host was very welcoming, making us feel right at home. The room was cozy, and when we opened the window, we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the river. It was a peaceful and charming stay.
In short, the quality of the Wuzhen accommodation is good, and the prices are reasonable, making an overnight stay worthwhile.

Wuzhen Morning Breakfast – Zao Cha Ke
Wuzhen Zao Cha Ke (乌镇早茶客), also known as Wuzhen Morning Breakfast, is a popular and authentic breakfast experience located in the Xizha Scenic Area of Wuzhen. It offers a unique and leisurely way to immerse yourself in the traditional atmosphere of this water town.
You can enjoy a local breakfast in rustic teahouses along the scenic canals of the Xizha area.
Zao Cha Ke is open to guests staying in hotels and guesthouses within the West Scenic Zone. If you spend a night in the Wuzhen Scenic Area, you can book a breakfast option for Zao Cha Ke at the morning market (水上集市) or choose to have breakfast at your hotel/guesthouse. We opted for the unique Zao Cha Ke experience and highly recommend it.
Note that it is advisable to book in advance, as there are daily visitor limits.
Wuzhen Morning Breakfast offers a variety of traditional food and local snacks. The local flavours made the experience even more memorable. The ordering process is interesting and conducted through WeChat, which adds a modern twist to the traditional dining experience.
Wuzhen Travel Tips: Arrive early to avoid the crowd. The stalls will close when the food runs out.
Guests staying at Wuzhen Guesthouse are entitled to CNY30 off their meals, which is a great deal. We enjoyed various local snacks, such as shaobing, xian dou jiang, boat-shaped sticky rice dumplings, yaotiao, and many more.

Operating Hours: 7:30 – 9:30 (Winter) and 7:00 – 9:00 (Summer)
More Wuzhen Travel Guide Tips
Admission Fee: The East and West quadrants are both scenic areas worth visiting, and each requires a separate entrance fee. Admission to both areas is CNY190. If you only have time to visit one, I recommend the West quadrant. It tends to be less crowded, offers more space for walking, and is generally more tranquil during the day. One notable difference is that some of the riverside buildings have been converted into guesthouses and hotels.
How to travel between East and West Scenic Area of Wuzhen: There is a free shuttle bus that operates between the East Scenic Zone and the West Scenic Zone. The bus ride takes approximately 8 to 10 minutes. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk from one area to the other, but I do not recommend walking unless you are confident with the directions. Be sure to have a good map or navigation on hand.
Boat Ride: Travelers can enjoy boat rides while exploring Wuzhen. Generally, the boat ride costs CNY 30 in the East and CNY 60 in the West.
Here are some useful tips when planning your Wuzhen itinerary.
Time Required: When planning your visit to Wuzhen Water Town, consider that you’ll need a full day to fully enjoy the experience, including travel time to and from Hangzhou.
Avoid Peak Times: Wuzhen is a popular tourist destination in China, so it’s best to avoid busy periods. Arriving early and allocating extra time will allow you to savor the charm of ancient Chinese culture. Be prepared for long wait times at popular food stalls.
Wuzhen at Night: Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Wuzhen after dark. The town takes on a magical ambiance at night as the canal walkways and squares are beautifully illuminated, creating a dreamy atmosphere.
Spend one night in Wuzhen: If your schedule allows, consider spending the night at one of the hotels in Wuzhen Xizha. Staying overnight enhances the experience, especially in the evening when the crowds have thinned. Keep in mind that day visitors must leave Wuzhen by 9:00 PM.
Where To Stay in Wuzhen
Accommodation Options in Wuzhen: There are many choices available for different budget groups when it comes to accommodation. Travelers can opt to stay inside or outside the scenic area. While staying inside is generally more expensive, it is highly recommended if possible.
One popular option is Wuzhen Homestay, a local homestay located in West Scenic Area, XiZha. Although it may not offer a hotel-class experience, the host provides exceptional hospitality, creating a cozy and comfortable environment. The homestay also offers free luggage delivery directly to the property, making it an excellent choice for those who want to explore the old village and its beautiful scenery at their own pace. Wuzhen Tong’an Inn is an amazing tavern-style hotel. The location is incredibly convenient located, situated right next to the tourism center. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and quiet. The best part is that staying here includes a West Scenic Area entrance ticket, allowing you multiple visits during your stay. Limited rooms available, so be sure to reserve early to secure your stay.
Another great option is Hampton by Hilton Wuzhen, which is situated about a 10-minute walk from Xizha. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the service provided by the staff is top-notch. Check for room availability.

Overall: A Visit to Wuzhen Water Town
Overall, our trip to Wuzhen was memorable and highly recommended. A visit to Wuzhen allows you to experience the simple beauty and romantic atmosphere of this ancient Chinese water town. While some people may dislike its commercial vibe and the large crowds, I believe that the restored architecture and canals in Wuzhen are still worth seeing. Be sure to visit Wuzhen if you are in the vicinity of Hangzhou or Shanghai!
