It is common to see large crowds eagerly waiting to dine at any of the Tao Tao Ju locations.

Steamed Rice Rolls, or Cheung Fun (肠粉) is a classic Cantonese breakfast choice and a must-eat food in Guangzhou. These slippery rice rolls are made from silky smooth steamed rice sheets that are rolled around a filling of beef, shrimp, char siu (barbecued pork), and vegetables.
The steamed rice rolls have a wonderful chewy texture and are typically served with a combination of sauces.
Where to Eat cheong fun in Guangzhou

YinJi Cheong Fun (银记肠粉店) is a popular spot to try the best Cheung fun in Guangzhou. The restaurant has multiple branches throughout the city, but the one near Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is the most convenient if you’re staying at the Mercure Guangzhou at Beijing Road Hotel. Be sure to arrive early, as the place gets very busy in the mornings, so plan your visit accordingly.
We ordered their must-try Cheung fun, which was silky smooth and super thin. So delicious! In addition, there is also a variety of congee and noodles to choose from on their menu. Besides, Yin Ji Cheong Fun also serves the Golden Sand Red Cheung Fun, a type of fried fritters wrapped in Cheung fun that has an addictive crispy texture. We tried this at Tao Tao Ju, so we decided to skip it this time.

Recommended Food: Fresh Prawn Pork Rice Roll (鲜虾猪肉肠) at RMB20
Cantonese Desserts (Tong Shui)

Cantonese cuisine also features a preference for sweet flavors, making desserts a highlight. When visiting Guangzhou, Cantonese dessert or Tong Sui (literally “sweep soup”) (糖水) is a must-try. Here are some popular Cantonese desserts that you shouldn’t miss:
- Double Skin Steamed Milk Pudding, or Shuang Pi Nai (双皮奶) – This pudding is made using a special steaming technique, resulting in a light, creamy dessert topped with a delicate layer of milk skin. The texture is rich and creamy, with a slight hint of texture from the milk skin.
- Ginger Milk Pudding (姜汁撞奶) – made by combining milk, sugar, and ginger juice. This dessert features a unique ginger flavor and a silky texture.
- Red Bean Soup (红豆汤) – This dessert offers a comforting experience, showcasing the unique flavor of red beans combined with silky tofu pudding that tastes remarkably fresh.
- Black Sesame Soup (芝麻糊) – Known for its strong aroma, this dessert has a sweet yet not overly greasy flavor. It’s an excellent choice for warming up during the winter months.

The shop is particularly famous for its Double Skin Milk, or Shuang Pi Nai (双皮奶). This is a classic dessert dish of Cantonese or Shunde cuisine, primarily found in the Shunde district of Foshan city, as well as in Guangzhou, Macau, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong.

Clay Pot Rice (Bao Zai Fan)

Clay Pot Rice, also called Bao Zai Fan (煲仔饭) is a must-try dish from Guangzhou. This Cantonese-style rice is cooked and served in a clay pot, topped with a variety of ingredients such as chicken, preserved meat, spare ribs, duck, Chinese sausage, and vegetables.
The rice is slow-cooked over charcoal, which creates a delicious layer of crispy rice at the bottom of the pot. The combination of savory ingredients and the fragrant aroma of the rice makes each bite truly satisfying.

1. God of Braised Pot (啫神) – We tried the delicious clay pot rice in Guangzhou. The restaurant we visited, God of Braised Pot (啫神), is a popular spot known for its clay pot rice. The restaurant has received the Michelin Bib Gourmand Award for several years.
There are several branches in Guangzhou, and we chose the one located on Beijing Road, which was convenient for us. It was packed with people during peak hours. To avoid the crowd, it’s best to arrive early. The rice was fragrant and well-seasoned. While it was decent, it wasn’t exactly to my taste, so I’ll give it a pass.
2. Wan Xing Xiao Shi (万兴小食) – Another restaurant worth recommending for clay pot rice is Wan Xing Xiao Shi, also known as Wan Xing Bao Zai Fan. This establishment has been operated by three brothers for over 20 years and truly represents the local flavors of Guangzhou. Unfortunately, we missed the chance to try it this time due to our limited schedule. We hope to visit it on our next trip.
Wan Xing Claypot Rice (万兴煲仔饭) – Address: 289 Wanfu Road, Yuexiu District.

With multiple branches in the Hunan and Guangdong provinces, including cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Dagefan is gaining recognition for operating its own farm to raise pigeons, ensuring the highest quality of food.
The flagship branch in Guangzhou has received a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award given to restaurants that provide a value-for-money gourmet experience.

Food highlight from Dagefan is the Crispy Braised Pigeon (红烧鸽皇). This dish is known for its perfectly crispy skin and juicy flesh that are simply irresistible. True to its name, each bite releases a burst of rich and flavorful pigeon juices.

Another standout dish on the menu is the Black Truffle Big Pigeon Rice (黑松露大鸽饭). This signature dish features rice cooked in a flavorful pigeon and pork bone broth, resulting in a delicious taste and a crispy golden crust on the bottom. It is topped with steamed pigeon meat and gizzards, which enhance its delightful aroma without overwhelming the flavors.
The pigeon dishes we had at Dagefan Restaurant were so good. Another must-eat food in Guangzhou!

Noodles – Wonton Noodles, Lai Fun

No trip to Guangzhou is complete without trying wonton noodles, as the city is the birthplace of this dish.
Wu Cai Ji Mian Jia (吴财记面家) is a renowned eatery famous for its wonton noodles, with over 70 years of history. This long-established restaurant has an authentic old Cantonese atmosphere and lacks any fancy decorations. While it is located in an alley, accessing it is easy.

The menu from Wu Cai Ji Mian Jia features very simple wonton noodles, which can be ordered with either wontons or beef brisket. I tried their signature beef wonton noodles, and they were delicious. The noodles had a perfect springy texture, and the broth was infused with a bold aroma of dried seafood. However, my friend found the wonton noodles to be a bit too salty for her taste. The portion sizes are generous, and the prices are quite reasonable.
We also ordered the fried wontons, which differ from the crispy fried versions we are used to. Some say this is the original authentic style of wontons. If you’re looking for genuine wonton noodles, it’s worth a try!
Wu Cai Ji Mian Jia (吴财记面家) – Address: DaTong Road HeLong Li 20, Guangzhou.
Recommended Food: Authentic Cantonese Wonton Noodles.

LinShiFu Xihua Road (林师傅 西华路) is a popular local noodles shop. One of their signature dishes is Lai Fun (濑粉), which features handmade noodles made by straining rice batter through a sieve to create a unique texture.
Lai Fun noodles are typically served in a thick gravy, and you can customize your bowl with pickled mustard leaf, pickled spicy vegetables, coriander, and spring onions. This thick, short rice noodle originates from Guangdong and is widely popular in Guangzhou.

Since this was for our morning breakfast, we ordered their signature lai fun noodles. We were shocked when the food was served. The food portion of lai fun from LinShiFu was enormous!
Other popular dishes include beef oval, beef brisket noodles, wonton noodles, and more. Many diners were ordering the beef brisket noodles. A bowl of noodles costs around RMB 10 to 20.
LinShiFu Xihua Road (林师傅 西华路) – Address: 485 Xihua Rd, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou.
Opening hours: Daily from 10:00 to 222:00.
Recommended Food: Signature Lai Fun, Beef Offal, beef brisket noodles.
Cantonese Stewed Beef Brisket and Beef Offal

Cantonese Stewed Beef Brisket (牛腩) and Beef Offal (牛杂/牛三星) are popular comfort foods in Guangzhou. These Cantonese staples are often served together with noodles, rice, or in clay pots. They can be commonly found at street stalls, small eateries, and Cantonese restaurants throughout the city. These dishes are favorites among the local people.
We didn’t survey the best places to eat beef brisket in Guangzhou, but it is commonly served at various noodle shops and small eateries. We enjoyed our stewed beef brisket with radish at Yi Jin Cheung Fun, and it was incredibly flavorful.
Authentic Cantonese Cuisine

Guangzhou is renowned for having the best and most authentic Cantonese cuisine. Cantonese Cuisine (广府菜), also known as Yue Cuisine (粤菜), is a must-try. Cantonese Cuisine of Guangdong Province is one of the Eight Great Cuisines of China. Common cooking techniques include steaming, stir-frying, and roasting.
Some notable common Cantonese dishes include White Cut Chicken (白斩鸡), mouthwatering Roasted Goose (烧鹅), Siu Laap (烧腊), Roast Suckling Pig (烤乳猪) and a greater variety of Cantonese cuisine.

Here are some establishments that are popular among locals and travelers:
1. Beiyuan Restaurant (北园酒家) in Guangzhou is a Michelin-recommended Cantonese restaurant located in the historic Yuexiu district. The spacious dining area exudes a traditional Chinese ambiance. While the food is decent, the prices are on the higher side.
2. Panxi Restaurant (泮溪酒家) at Liwan is one of the iconic establishments for Cantonese cuisine and dim sum in Guangzhou. Situated by Liwan Bay, the restaurant is renowned for its Lingnan garden characteristics, providing an authentic Cantonese dining experience. The food is traditional Cantonese style, but the prices are also on the pricey side.
Panxi Restaurant (泮溪酒家) – Address: No. 151, Longjin West Road, Liwan District.
3. Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) is a famous chain with several branches across the city. It is considered one of the iconic restaurants in Guangzhou. The menu features typical dim sum and Cantonese cuisine, and surprisingly, the prices are quite affordable.
Guangzhou Food Guide Tips: Most Cantonese establishments serve dim sum in the morning and Cantonese cuisine for lunch and dinner. I normally choose restaurants specific to each type of food for tasting.
Long-established Local Restaurant

While many reputable establishments offer excellent dining experiences, there are also local establishments that are worth exploring. We sought out the best local restaurants specializing in Cantonese dishes that truly represent this remarkable cuisine.
We were invited by local friends to Xing Yuen Restaurant (星苑饭店), a long-established local restaurant (老字号) to experience authentic Cantonese cuisine. It’s similar to a Cantonese style dai pai dong (粤菜风味大排档), which is traditionally a type of open-air food stall with seating. This restaurant has been delighting diners for years with its traditional dishes and is well-known among locals.

Xing Yuen Restaurant featured a variety of classic local Cantonese dishes, including goose, pork, fish, seafood, vegetables dishes, and even exotic dishes. We had about 7 dishes (noodles, gooese, sweet and sour pork, fish skin, crispy yellow eel, roasted pigeon, vegetables) and like most of them. All the dishes here are reasonably priced and come in generous portions.

My local friend also ordered an exotic Cantonese dish for us to try. The fried crispy yellow eel (炸黄鳝) isn’t too bad.
The ambiance is comfortable, and the restaurant is clean, making it a convenient spot for families and senior citizens to dine. While the service may not be the best due to the large number of diners. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, drinks, and casual conversations.
Our meal at Xing Yuen local restaurant in Guangzhou turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences we had during our visit.
Xing Yuen Restaurant (星苑饭店) – Address: 1 Taiping Tongjin, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou.
Recommended Food: Authentic Cantonese cuisine.
Expected Cost: Approximately RMB 100-200 per person, depending on the food ordered.
Guangzhou Street Food and Snacks

Yuan Ming Siu Mai (圆明烧卖) is a popular food stall in Guangzhou that specializes in siu mai. This stall is hard to miss, as it often has a long queue, even at night. There are a few siu mai stalls open in Guangzhou.

They serve freshly made siu mai that is piping hot and offered at very reasonable prices. It’s no surprise that most of the people waiting in line are locals.

Yuen Kee Dumpling, also known as Yuen Kee Yun Jiao (袁记云饺), is renowned for its handmade Cantonese-style dumplings and wontons. This eatery originated in Guangzhou, China. What began as a small establishment serving local residents has now expanded to over 500 locations worldwide.

The Yuen Kee Yun Jiao menu features a variety of ingredient options, including chicken, pork, mushrooms, and a selection of vegetables, allowing customers to choose according to their preferences. All their wontons are made fresh, and patrons can even watch the staff prepare the dumplings right on the spot. The dumpling is perfectly plump and juicy. It’s a great stop for a quick snack!

Xie San Bao – Crab Roe Dishes

Xie San Bao (蟹叁宝) is a popular restaurant chain famous for its crab roe dishes. The restaurant has locations throughout China, including in Guangzhou. Although this dish does not originate from Guangzhou, we missed it dearly since our last trip to Shanghai, so we decided to enjoy it during our visit to Guangzhou.

We ordered the Signature Crab Roe Set and opted to pair it with rice, as recommended. Some black vinegar was served alongside to balance the greasiness of the dish. The flavor was amazing!
Bao’s Pastry – Seaweed Chicken Floss Buns

Bao’s Pastry, also known as BaoShiFu (鲍师傅), has become a culinary icon in Guangzhou, offering delicious treats. It has gained popularity throughout China, particularly for its pastries, especially the seaweed chicken floss buns (紫菜肉松小贝). We visited their shop located on Beijing Road.

The floss buns from Bao’s Pastry were soft and fluffy, with a generous amount of seaweed chicken floss. Definitely worth the hype.
Butterful & Creamorous – Parisan Pastries

Butterful & Creamorous (黄油与面包) is a well-known Korean bakery chain celebrated for its high-quality, European-style Parisan pastries. This trendy pastry shop has gained immense popularity in Shanghai and Guangzhou. The bakery is particularly famous for its visually stunning displays and offers a wide variety of sweet and savory items.

During our visit to Guangzhou, we took the opportunity to sample some of the pastries from Butterful & Creamorous. There is an extensive selection of breads and cakes to choose from.

Try their popular items, including the Dubai Chocolate Pretzel, French Blueberry Cream Napoleon, cheese bacon tart, Hazelnut Chocolate Babka Cinnamon Roll, and the original Wellington Steak Croissant, among many others.
There are so many pastry options and we chose some of our favorite pastry options to try!
