The fastest way to get from Nagoya to Osaka or vice versa is by taking the shinkansen or Japan’s bullet train.

Nagoya (Nagoya Station) and Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) are the primary terminal and are connected by the JR Tokaido Shinkansen. There are several types of shinkansen that you can take: Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama. Nozomi trains require about 50 minutes for the trip, while Hikari and Kodama trains take between 55 and 70 minutes with more stops in between.

All the Shinkansen mentioned can take you from Osaka to Nagoya or vice versa. However, Kindly take note that if you’re holding a JR Pass, you won’t be able to use that on Nozomi trains. The good news is, both Hikari and Kodama trains accept JR Pass.

Note that although Nagoya is a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen, only the National JR Pass Rail Pass covers travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen. No direct JR train connect between Nagoya and Osaka, so traveling time can be range up to 3 to 4 hours depending on the stops and transfer time.

Aside from JR, there is another train company offering a direct train service from Osaka to Nagoya. Kintetsu (近鉄) is the biggest railway company in Japan with extensive railway connections. It connects Nagoya Station with Ise and various cities in the Kansai Region, including Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka.

Kintetsu trains run between Osaka (Osaka-Namba Station) and Nagoya (KintetsuNagoya Station). The Kintetsu-Nagoya is located just next to the JR Nagoya Station.

The direct limited express train takes about 2 hours with twice hourly. Generally, the ride will cost you about ¥4300 to ¥4500 for a one-way fare. All seats on the Limited Express trains are with seat reservations. While the much slower express trains will cost only ¥2410, it takes 3.5 hours with several transfers along the ride.

Kintetsu Rail Pass

When comparing between JR local trains and Kintetsu, the Kintetsu Railway will be slight costly. But most travelers will choose this option as Kintetsu Railway is offering the Kintetsu Rail Pass that offer you unlimited access to the Kintetsu Railway network, which covers much of the Kansai Region and Nagoya. If you are planning to to visit Kyoto, Nara or even Mie, this is the best budget option!

Transport Pass from Kintetsu can be use to travel from Osaka to Nagoya: 

Take note that the Kintetsu Rail Pass for 1 Day and 2 Days is not covered up to Nagoya and Mie. So you are not able to use the train options from Nagoya to Osaka.

Using a highway bus is the cheapest option if you are looking for a budget option to travel between Nagoya and Osaka. Depending on the traffic, the journey usually takes around 3 hours. One-way fares can go as lowest from ¥1500 to ¥2500.
