It serves as a significant commercial and manufacturing hub and is well known for its foreign trade. The city is resembling Hong Kong but offering a more authentic experience.
We have always heard wonderful things about Guangzhou being a food paradise, so we were excited to finally visit. During our trip, we immersed ourselves in the city’s history, culture, and local life while indulging in some of the region’s famous southern delicacies. A short getaway of about three nights is ideal for exploring all that Guangzhou has to offer.
In this Guangzhou Travel Guide blog, we’d like to share our tips for exploring the city in case you are planning a visit. Whether you’re interested in shopping, food, fashion, or nightlife, we hope this guide will help you plan your Guangzhou itinerary. You’ll quickly discover that Guangzhou has something for everyone.
Guangzhou itinerary: Pre-Trip Essential
Guangzhou is beautifully blends modern architecture with a rich cultural heritage. While it resembles Hong Kong with its impressive skyscrapers and luxury hotels, Guangzhou offers a more authentic experience. The city is home to centuries-old historical sites and traditional districts, making it truly unique.
For first-time visitors, planning a Guangzhou itinerary typically involves spending 2 to 3 days to explore the city’s top highlights. Must-see attractions include the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Canton Tower, the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, Shamian Island, and Yong Qing Fang, among others. Be sure to take the opportunity to savor delicious Cantonese cuisine.
If you’re considering an extended trip in the region, you might want to visit nearby cities such as Shenzhen, Foshan, and Jiangmen to experience the unique Lingnan culture and architecture. Overall, Guangzhou is ideal for a short getaway, packed with attractions and culinary delights.
How To Get to and Travel Around Guangzhou
By Flight: International travelers typically reach Guangzhou by flying into Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Additionally, there are frequent domestic flights available from various cities throughout China.
By Bullet Train: traveling by high-speed train is another option, with the most common routes being from Hong Kong (about 1 hour), Shenzhen (approximately 30 minutes), Beijing (8-10 hours), and Shanghai (7-8.5 hours), among others.
Once you arrive in Guangzhou, getting around the city is easy. Public transportation is both comfortable and convenient. The city boasts an extensive metro system, making it simple to navigate – just plan your day accordingly and group activities by location. The metro is new and clean.
Besides the metro, you can also use buses, taxis, or simply walk. Ride-hailing services Didi is highly recommended as fares are quite reasonable in China.
Best Place To Stay in Guangzhou
Guangzhou, a large and prosperous modern city, offers a rich array of accommodations. The city’s metro system is efficient, and ride-hailing services like Didi are affordable, making it easy to get around regardless of where you choose to stay. Here are some top hotel picks:
LN Garden Hotel Guangzhou is an excellent classic five-star hotel. Beautifully designed, it offers a blend of modern luxury and traditional touches, making it a popular choice for travelers seeking a luxurious stay in Guangzhou.
Mercure Guangzhou Beijing Road Pedestrian Street Hotel is conveniently located along Beijing Road, just a few minutes’ walk from Beijing Road station. There are many eateries and fine restaurants nearby. The rooms are clean and offered at reasonable prices.
JI Hotel (Guangzhou Tianhe East Railway Station) is ideally situated at Guangzhou East station, providing great access to various attractions in the city. It’s especially convenient for travelers using public transportation. The service is excellent, and the rooms are spacious and clean.

Planing for Guangzhou itinerary
We enjoyed our time in Guangzhou so much that we want to return for the food and attractions. There are many things to do and see, so first-time visitors should plan to stay for a minimum of three days. Three full days will provide enough time to visit the top attractions in Guangzhou and explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods.
3-Day Guangzhou itinerary:
- Day 1: Canton Tower, Guangdong Museum, Huacheng Square
- Day 2: Shamian Island, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, Yong Qing Fang, Cantonese Opera Art Museum, Bruce Lee Ancestral Home
- Day 3: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Museum of the Nanyue King, Guangzhou Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, Dafo Temple
Above is our suggested Guangzhou itinerary for three to four days in Guangzhou. Feel free to adjust it based on your interests. If you have more days, it is advisable to spend an additional one to two days in Guangzhou for food and shopping!
Day 1: The Moderm of Guangzhou
We arrived in Guangzhou late in the evening and took a Didi e-hailing service from the airport to our hotel. It was very convenient; all you need to do is download the app. After settling in at the hotel, we headed out for dinner and spent the rest of the evening wandering around.
The next day, we started our Day 1 Guangzhou itinerary by exploring this modern city. We visited the Canton Tower and the nearby Guangzhou Museum. Afterwards, we spent the rest of the day exploring Huacheng Square.
Canton Tower
The Canton Tower (广州塔), also known as Guangzhou TV Tower is an incredible place to visit in Guangzhou. Standing at 604 meters, it has become a symbol of modern Guangzhou and offers spectacular views of the city.
Ticket prices for the Canton Tower vary depending on the level you wish to access. The basic entry ticket costs CNY150 and allows you to take the elevator up to 433 meters. There are also more expensive tickets available, which grant access to a bubble tram and a sky drop!

We didn’t make it up to the tower but enjoyed the beautiful view from the viewing area. If you want an aerial view, you might consider going up to the tower. The sights from the top are breathtaking, especially at night when the city lights up. The glass observation deck also provides an exhilarating experience—it’s definitely something you shouldn’t miss.
Canton Tower (广州塔)
Opening Hours: Daily 9:30 to 22:30.
Admission fee: Start from the basic entry ticket costs CNY150 for 84th floor. Reserve the Canton Tower Admission Ticket from Trip.com.
Getting there: The easiest way to reach Canton Tower is by taking the Guangzhou Metro. Use Metro Line 3 and get off at Canton Tower Station (广州塔站).
Guangdong Museum
If you have more time on your day 1 Guangzhou itinerary when visiting the Canton Tower, consider visiting the Guangzhou Museum.
The Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆) is one of the most popular attractions in Guangzhou. Its exterior resembles a diverse treasure box, adorned in black and red colors. The architecture is stunning, and inside, you’ll find a wealth of exhibitions happening year-round. The surrounding area is also impressive, with the Canton Tower located directly in front of the museum.
Inside, the museum features four floors filled with extraordinary pieces of art, sculptures, and various artifacts, including a small dinosaur exhibit. The collection is extensive, and the layout is logical, making it easy to appreciate the displays. It is widely recognized as an innovative museum.
The best part is that entry to the museum is free with reservation is a MUST. Visitors need to prepare to show an ID document, such as a passport, for access.
Guangdong Museum (广东博物馆)
Opening Hours: From 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry: 16:00). Closed on Monday

Huacheng Square
After visiting the provincial capital area, take a stroll to Huacheng Square. It is one of the most romantic spots in Guangzhou, offering stunning sunset views, vibrant lights at night, and picturesque scenery amidst the towering skyscrapers, as well as a view of the Canton Tower.
Huacheng Square, also known as Flower City Square (花城广场) is a large, open park located in the heart of a bustling skyline. This beautiful square offers stunning views of the world’s tallest tower, the Canton Tower, as well as the Guangzhou Opera House, the Library, the Pearl River, and exquisite flower gardens.
The park is well-maintained and clean, creating a spacious atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation. As you stroll around, you can discover various sculptures and artistic displays. Many visitors come here to take photos with the skyscappers and majestic Canton Tower in the background.
Visiting Huacheng Square at night is especially lovely, as you can enjoy the sight of the buildings illuminated.

Day 2: Explore the Cultural Sites of Guangzhou
On Day 2, we will focus on the cultural sites in the Liwan District of Guangzhou. Shamian Island, Yongqingfang, and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street are all located within walking distance of each other.
We will start our day by visiting Shamian Island, where we can enjoy a morning stroll and admire over 150 European colonial buildings. Next, we’ll head to Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street for a delicious dim sum brunch at Tao Tao Ju before diving into our Guangzhou itinerary. We will also try the famous double-layer milk custard at Nanxin Milk Desserts and take some time for local shopping.
Our next stop will be Yongqingfang, where we can explore the former residence of Bruce Lee, visit the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, and stroll through the historical district. It can involve quite a bit of walking. We advise wearing comfortable shoes and adjusting your itinerary based on physical fitness and weather conditions.
Shamian Island
Shamian Island (沙面岛) is a small, peaceful island located in the vibrant city of Guangzhou. This charming island is a must-visit attraction for any Guangzhou itinerary.
This island is relatively small, measuring just 900 meters (980 yards) long from east to west and 300 meters (330 yards) wide from south to north. You won’t feel tired after a walk around it.
Over a hundred years ago, Shamian Island was a foreign concession dominated by British and French influence and served as a hub for banking and trade. Today, it is a popular tourist destination known for its well-preserved colonial-era architecture and lush streetscapes. The buildings reflect a continental charm, offering visitors a delightful glimpse into the past.
As you stroll around Shamian Island, you’ll admire the enchanting European-style architecture. The area is dotted with quaint cafes, tea shops, interesting boutiques, and art and craft stores.
The scenery is breathtaking, with numerous picturesque spots perfect for photography. It’s an ideal place to spend a few hours during your visit to Guangzhou, allowing you to relax and soak in the beautiful surroundings.
Shamian Island 沙面岛

Getting to Shamian Island is quite simple. The most convenient way is to take Metro Line 1 or 6 to Huangsha Station (黄沙站), and then walk across the bridge to the island.
Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street
Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street (上下九商业步行街) is a vibrant commercial hub in Guangzhou, offering visitors a wide array of sights, shopping, and dining options. The street features numerous shops that sell a diverse range of merchandise, ensuring that there’s something for everyone in the family.
To reach Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Road, walk about 15 minutes north from Shamian Island and cross LiuErsan Road to enter the district. Alternatively, you can take a Didi e-hailing ride to Shangxiajiu pedestrian Street to save time and hassle.
Brunch at Tao Tao Ju
We chose Didi option and dropped off directly at Tao Tao Ju Shifu Main Store (陶陶居 十甫总店) for our dim sum brunch. Tao Tao Ju is renowned for its traditional Cantonese cuisine, especially dim sum dishes. The dim sum is excellent and suits my taste. Although the price is slightly high compared to some local Guangzhou dim sum restaurants, we believe the food quality is better and more flavorful.

After the dim sum brunch, continue the relaxing stroll to Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street for local shopping and snacks.
Along with enjoying dim sum at Tao Tao Ju, we also tried the famous double-layer milk custard at Nanxin Milk Desserts Expert (南信牛奶甜品专家), which is just a few doors down from Tao Tao Ju. The desserts here truly live up to their reputation.
They are soft, milky, and incredibly silky smooth.
Compared Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, Shangxiajiu is home to many small, affordable local shops.
Additionally, the experience of strolling through Shangxiajiu is delightful since vehicles are not allowed to enter the area. Visitors can easily spend an entire day here, shopping, trying local foods, and shopping some more.

Getting there: The nearest metro station is Changshou Road Station (长寿路站)
Yong Qing Fang
Yong Qing Fang (永庆坊), built in the 1930s, is a cultural and historical district located in the Liwan District near Enning Road in Guangzhou. This neighborhood is recognized as a heritage area, offering visitors a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Over the years, Yong Qing Fang has witnessed many significant historical and cultural events in Guangzhou. Many of the old buildings have been restored and transformed into shops, noodle bars, bakeries, and both Chinese and Western restaurants, while still retaining their original architectural style and historical value. Today, it stands as a landmark and a popular tourist attraction in the city.
Getting there is easy. You can walk about 10 minutes from Shang Xia Jiu Pedestrian Road to Yong Qing Fang. Alternatively, the nearest metro station is Huang Sha Station (黄沙站), which requires the shortest walk.
Strolling through Yong Qing Fang is a delightful experience. The atmosphere is serene yet bustling with visitors navigating the small lanes, bridges, and walkways, making it feel as if time has momentarily stopped.
When visiting Yong Qing Fang, there are several notable attractions that you shouldn’t miss. Two must-visit locations are the Yueju Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆) and the Bruce Lee Ancestral Home (李小龙祖居). We will provide more details in the sections below.
There is another area where the streets narrow into charming lanes, featuring even more quaint shops. It’s a great place to explore and discover different aspects of the vibrant city of Guangzhou!

Cantonese Opera Art Museum
When wandering at Yong Qing Fang, we wandered toward the Yueju Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆), also known as the Cantonese Opera Art Museum. This place is highly recommended for your Guangzhou itinerary when exploring Yongqingfang.
The Cantonese Opera Art Museum is a short walk from the bustling Yong Qing Fang commercial street and is definitely worth the detour for cultural immersion.
Cantonese Opera Art Museum beautifully blends Lingnan architecture with traditional craftsmanship, drawing design inspiration from ancient garden-style buildings. Visitors can enjoy historical architecture, a beautiful garden, and exhibitions for free, but reservations are required in advance.
The museum is quite large and divided into the north and south banks. The south bank features lovely gardens, exhibition halls, stages, and theaters, providing venues for various activities and performances. In contrast, the north bank focuses on the restoration and preservation of Cantonese opera cultural relics.
Guangzhou Travel Pro Tips: There are free Cantonese opera performances every morning and evening. I was fortunate to catch a performance during my visit, and sitting there felt like a journey through time.
Additionally, there are exhibitions showcasing marvelous costumes, jewelry, and accessories. The displays are colorful and very engaging. Visiting the Cantonese Opera Art Museum is truly a unique experience.
Cantonese Opera Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆)
Opening Hours: From 9:00 to 17:00 (Last entry: 16:30). Closed on Monday

Bruce Lee Ancestral Home
One of the most popular landmarks in Yong Qing Fang area is the former residence of the legendary Chinese martial arts expert Bruce Lee (Li Xiao Long). The mansion is located at the narrow alley toward the end of Yong Qing Fang.
This small former residence offers relics and information about Bruce Lee and his family. Many visitors come here to take photos. It’s definitely worth a walk if you’re a Kung Fu and martial arts enthusiast.

Day 3: Visit Guangzhou Historical Sites
On Day 3, explore some of the historical sites in Guangzhou. The city is home to many top historical attractions and museums that will keep you engaged. Most of these sites are within walking distance of each other, making them easy to visit. We recommend choosing 2 or 3 locations for a thorough yet manageable experience. Popular attractions include the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Dafo Temple, and the Mausoleum Museum of the Nanyue King. Additionally, take some time to wander around Beijing Road, where you can find a variety of food options.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
For the morning of the next day on your Guangzhou itinerary, visit the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠堂), also known as Chen Clan Academy (陈氏书院). This ancient museum is an excellent destination if you want to learn about Guangdong’s history and culture.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a true masterpiece of Cantonese Lingnan architecture. It was originally built by a wealthy Chinese overseas family to serve as an educational center, preparing students for government examinations during the Qing Dynasty. After the fall of the Qing, its role changed several times.
Today, it not only serves as a museum of art and architecture but also continues to function as an educational center for fine arts.
The historical site museum’s collection is remarkable, showcasing traditional local craftsmanship. It features a large array of wood carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings, pottery, plasterworks, and iron engravings. Additionally, there are small handmade items available for purchase in the shops located within the hall.
Guangzhou Travel Guide Tip: It can get quite crowded and hot, particularly around noon, so it’s best to visit in the morning.
In short, visiting the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is both exciting and memorable. The site features beautiful, ancient architecture with intricate decorations.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠堂)

Admission fee: CNY10 per person!
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is easily accessible, located directly in front of the Chen Clan Academy (Chen Jia Ci) station. Take exit D, and the entrance will be right in front of you. There is an entry fee of CNY 10 per person (children under 18 enter for free). You should plan to spend about an hour or 2 hours exploring the site.
The Mausoleum Museum of the Nanyue King
The Mausoleum Museum of the Nanyue King (西汉南越王博物馆) is one of the historical site to visit while in Guangzhou. The museum’s highlight is the most ancient and largest Han dynasty tomb, which dates back more than 2,000 years and was discovered by chance in the 1980s. There are many remarkable relics on display, including jade carvings, burial shrouds, porcelain pillows, and more. All the exhibits are well laid out, with clear labels and documentation, and there are brief English descriptions available.
The museum is relatively small, and a visit can be completed in about 30 minutes. Entry is free, but foreign visitors will need to register at the counter with their passports. It’s definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in history, though it may be less engaging for young people and children.
The Mausoleum Museum of the Nanyue King (西汉南越王博物馆)
Address: 867 Jiefang North Rd, Yuexiu, Guangzhou.

Getting there: Take Metro Line 2 and get off at Yuexiu Park station (越秀公园). Use Exit E and walk for about 5 minutes.
Guangzhou Beijing Road Pedestrian Street
Guangzhou’s Beijing Road Pedestrian Street(北京路步行街) is a bustling shopping street filled with retail stores, local vendors, and historical landmarks.
The street is quite expansive and divided into different sections, offering a wide variety of shopping options and many dining choices. It’s a great addition to your Guangzhou itinerary, whether you’re looking to shop, enjoy local cuisine, or simply take a leisurely stroll.
Since we are staying nearby, we often come here for shopping and food hunting. This place has largely met my expectations for local food. We enjoyed shopping time at Beijing Road, especially the beautiful lights at night. The area is full of life and energy.
Beijing Road Pedestrian Street(北京路步行街)

Dafo Temple
In addition to the shops near Beijing Road , there is a historic Buddhist temple that is worth visiting. The Dafo Temple (Temple of Big Buddha, 大佛寺), which is over a hundred years old, is located in the heart of the city, adjacent to Beijing Road.
Dafo Temple features impressive architecture and lighting, particularly highlighted by its grand front steps. While it may not be a must-see attraction, it is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Don’t forget to check out the Dafo Temple in the evening when its beautiful lighting creates a captivating atmosphere. The best time to visit is around 6:00 PM, when the lights illuminate the temple, making for a unique experience.
More Time for Guangzhou itinerary?
The three-day Guangzhou itinerary will keep you busy during your visit to this incredible city. However, if you have additional time to explore, there are several attractions worth visiting in and around Guangzhou.
Liwan Lake Park (荔湾湖公园) features a beautiful lake surrounded by scenic waterways. Local residents often gather here to practice Tai Chi. You can enjoy a boat ride from one end of the park to the other, and there are plenty of options for delicious Cantonese food, ranging from full-service restaurants to street vendors. Be sure to try the hand-ground sesame soup dessert; it’s a must-have!
The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees (六榕寺) is an ancient Buddhist temple known for its stunning pagoda and lush gardens, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Baiyun Mountain (白云山) is one of Guangzhou’s most famous natural attractions. Renowned for its lush greenery and panoramic views of the city, it’s a fantastic place to escape urban life. Plan to spend a full day visiting Baiyun Mountain to fully enjoy the experience.
To expand your Guangzhou travel options, you can take a bullet train to nearby cities for a 1 to 3-day side trip from Guangzhou.
Foshan (佛山): Spend a day learning about Wing Chun Kung Fu and the legendary stories of Bruce Lee. You can also enjoy delicious food in Shunde for a leisurely experience.
Shenzhen (深圳): Plan a 2 to 3-day visit to explore the special economic zone. Similar to Guangzhou, Shenzhen is known for its vibrant culture, modern skyline, and bustling shopping scene.
