We tried on various of the best food in Tsukadanojo Miyazaki Honten and highly recommended if you are looking for what to eat in Miyazaki.

Miyazaki is famous for its “Miyazaki Jitokko”. This home-bred domestic chicken is carefully raised in the free-range and stress-free natural environment. Even their feed is carefully developed. With such a good feeding process, the meat is low in calories and fat. It also comes with refreshing taste compare with normal chicken. This resulted in Miyazaki is also famous for chicken dishes other than beef.

In Miyazaki, chicken is served in different cuts and can be eaten in various ways. There are a variety of chicken dishes to try on in Miyazaki such as Nanban chicken, charcoal grill chicken or even sashimi chicken in raw. During our trip, we visited Tsukadanojo Miyazaki Honten to try on their famous chicken dishes.

Tsukada Nojo Miyazaki Honten (塚田農場 宮崎本店)

Among all the best restaurant, we choose went to the Tsukadanojo Miyazaki Honten (塚田農場 宮崎本店) for its famous chicken dishes. It is one of the reputation izakaya chain restaurants in Japan and Miyazaki Honten is where it all started. Most importantly, Tsukadanojo is the best place that we can sample all the mouth-watering chicken dishes in one restaurant.

We walked for early dinner after we came back from day trip to Miyazaki along Ninchinan coast. Out of surprise, most of the table already reserved and we only had counter bar seating.

Tsukada Nojo Miyazaki is popular among locals and it is almost full during our visit. It is a lively izakaya and we could hear guests laughing and cheering with friends and even staff. Insides, there are tatami, table and bar counter seating for guests.

The English menu was produced and friendly staff were ready to help and explain for the ordering process. There are plenty of chicken dishes with pictures and a brief explanation on the menu. Everything looks so delicious. Please take note that certain dishes with a minimum of two pax per order. It is common for a restaurant in Japan. We ordered plenty of chicken dishes to try on.

Cover Charges Dish in Tsukadanojo Miyazaki

The Ootoshi came first. It was an appetizer and served as cover charge at about ¥390. We had some vegetables together with miso dipping sauce. It was fresh and crunchy. A good start for our feast in Tsukada Nojo Miyazaki.

Potato salad with soft boiled egg (塚だまポテトサラダ) from Tsukadama. We picked this as Tsukada also famous on egg dishes. There are also some other great dishes such as cooked leek with fresh eggs yolk is worth to try on.

Next, the Nanban chicken (若鶏のチキン南蛮) topped with the overflow of in house specialty’s tartar sauce. The succulent crispy fried chicken was so tasty and juicy. Perfectly match with the sweet and sour tartar sauce.

The highlight among all the chicken dishes. The Miyazaki ground chicken Jitokko in charcoal grill (みやざき地頭鶏じとっこ炭火焼). Please take note this is a one-person portion. We kept debating whether want to order for one or two people. But end up we voted for the chicken nabe soup as that required a minimum two order.

The grilled chicken was served in piping hot. We could even hear the sizzling soup when it served. The bit-sized chunk domestic chicken was seasoned with salt and carefully grilled in the hot heat charcoal fire. The meat may not look appetizing with dark-colored on charcoal-skin. But trust me, it tastes way better than it looked. A must eat food in Miyazaki.

The lightly burn charcoal-grilled chicken was so juicy and tender. It even tastes so good when eating together with the homemade scallion and ginger sauce. We were a bit regret ordered it for one person. I can even finish the whole plate without sharing with my friend.

Next, the Motsunabe served with lemon in clear chicken soup (レモンもつ鍋). There are three types of motsunabe such as lemon, menta or salt soup to choose from. We all fall in love once we have the fist sipped. The soup was rich with chicken flavor without the oiliness taste. Together with lemon and vegetable, it taste so refreshing. It is a limited seasonal dish and only served in winter months.

Lastly is the spicy noodle (辛麺チャプチェ) served together with meat, egg, mushroom, and vegetables. We ordered this dish because carving for noodles. It tastes good and we preferred other chicken dishes more. We should order other chicken dishes in Tsukada Nojo.

Besides, Tsukada Nojo also served chicken sashimi if you want to try the unique local specialty in Miyazaki. It has to be so fresh that only Japan can do it right. We give it a miss as there is too much good food.

All in all, we had the satisfying chicken feast in Tsukada Nojo Miyazaki Honten. Their chicken dishes are so delicious and we could taste the sweetness and freshness of the meat. Worth to try on. Highly recommended if you are looking for what to eat in Miyazaki.

The chicken specialty izakaya restaurant, Tsukada Nojo Nichinan Miyazaki Honten is located at the busy street in central city with 13 minutes walk from the Miyazaki station. We get off during our bus ride when back from the day trip from Nichinan coast. There are a wide variety of chicken dishes in Tsukada Nojo Nichinan, Miyazaki Honten. There are a lot of local specialties such as Jidori no Sumibiyaki (charcoal grill chicken), Namban chicken, Miyazaki beef and various of Miyazaki gourmet that worth to try on. Bitch size chunks of top quality domestic chicken are seasoned with salt and pepper, then grilled on the high heat charcoal to perfection. The dark charcoaled skin has a smoky and flavorful aroma, resulted from high heat charcoal grill. Perfectly match with the juicy and exquisite softness meat. Must eat food in Miyazaki.

Best place to eat charcoal grill chicken: Many restaurants and izakaya are serving for this delicious local food. We love the charcoal grill chicken from Tsukada Nojo Miyazaki Honten. It tastes so delicious and juicy. One of the best food that we ate during our trip to Miyazaki. Alternatively, visit the Maruman yakitori hoten for some extraordinarily tasty charcoal chicken.

Nanban Chicken

While Nanban chicken can be found all over Japan, Miyazaki claim for the originator of Nanban chicken. The chicken is marinated with sweet vinegar and deep-fried to perfection, topped with tartar sauce when serving. When sample it, the succulent crispy fried chicken is a great combination with in house original tartar sauce, comprised of mayonnaise and diced onions.

Where To eat Nanban chicken: Visit the Ogura Honten for the best Nanban chicken in Miyazaki. This local delicacy was said to have originated from Ogura in the 1960s. It is an old fashioned western-style restaurant with 10 minutes walk from Miyazaki station. Alternatively, most of the restaurants in Miyazaki are serving this delicious chicken Nanban dishes. The restaurant in Sunmesse also famous for this dishes. Many visitors are having Nanban chicken during their visit to Sunmesse Nichinan.

Miyazaki Beef

Another particularly famous Miyazaki delicacy is Miyazaki beef. It is a name only given to beef that raise in Miyazaki which meet strict quality standard. The flavorful brand of beef is graded as high and proud of Miyazaki.

In Miyazaki, many restaurants serve Miyazaki beef and the good news is in a much more reasonable price. But, it is still very expensive for premium beef. You can eat the Miyazaki beef at Hitotsuba Miyachiku or Oyodo Kahan Miyachiku. The price range can be easily from at least ¥5,000 for the finest part of Miyazaki beef. Alternatively, for budget way, try the Teppanyaki Miyazaki Beef for about ¥3,000.

Tropical Fruit Hyuganatsu

Thanks to the temperate climate, Miyazaki is famous for many kinds of fruit. The hyuganatsu (日向夏) is a yellow citrus fruit that has basked under the sun of Miyazaki. It was first in Miyazaki prefecture and widely cultivated throughout the region.

This light yellow hyuganatsu has freshness and invigorating tanginess. Spring is the harvesting season. During this, you can be easily seeing hyuganatsu sold along the roadside. It has has a distinct sweet-sour flavor with a pleasant acid bite, made it popular among lady. The fruit can also be used to make sorbets, ice cream, drink or dessert.

Udon

No doubt, udon is the best local dishes in all prefecture of Japan and widely served across Japan. There are various types of Udon dishes but the most common is served in a hot or cold dish. The thick, wheat-flour noodle is perfectly cooked in a lightly flavored broth, made from soy sauce, vegetable or fish. Normally, a bowl of udon cost less than ¥800. This best cheap eat is the best food for breakfast or a quick bite in Miyazaki.

Where to eat udon in Miyazaki: We had our Udon in Sankaku Chaya Toyokichi udon (三角茶屋 豊吉うどん) located in Miyazaki station. Their long-established main shop was first founded 87 years ago. It is a simple yet satisfying meal after a tiring day. If you would like to try on some Miyazaki’s Udon, Shigenoi is your choice. Shigenoi is famous for Kamaage udon. The hand-cut udon noodles are accompanied by a seasonings dipping sauce with lots of fried tempura batter on top. You can even drink the remaining broth together with dipping sauce.

Located about one hours drive from Miyazaki city, Nichinan is popular with local specialty dishes made from high-grade bonito fish. The fresh bonito fish (Katsuo) are caught with single line pole fishing method (Ippon-zuri, 一本釣り) and marinated in an in-house special sauce. Nichinan served bonito fish in its unique and multiple way to enjoy it. Fresh bonito can be eaten raw as sashimi, grilled over the hibachi or pouring hot broth over it together with rice.

Where to eat bonito fish: Gallery Kodama in Obi town, Nichinan served the bonito in a set meal. This katsuoaburi-ju is the best way to enjoy the best local food in Miyazaki. Try it and choose the best way to enjoy the bonito fish.

Nagashi Somen

What To Eat in Takachiho Gorge

When you are visiting Takachiho Gorge, make you lead to the restaurant nearby for Nagashi somen (そめん流し). The somen is released in the water flowing bamboo and you need to catch it using the chopstick before it flowing away. Next, dipped the somen noodles into the special sauce provided and continue to catch the coming one. If you miss it, the leftover somen will be collected at the end of the water bamboo slide.

The flowing somen noodles is a fun eating experience. We tried this traditional yet entertaining nagashi somen in Chiho no Ie Teahouse.

Where to eat Nagashi Somen in Takachiho: Chiho no Ie Teahouse (千穂の家) invented and served this signature food since the 1950s. Although it is a popular summer dish in Japan, nagashi somen is served all year around here.
