Most day-trippers arrive at Hallstatt around 11 a.m to 4 p.m. If possible, avoid these peak hours and explore Hallstatt in the morning or late afternoon. We arrived at Hallstatt after spending our perfect day in Cesky Krumlov by shuttle service after 3 hours of road journey.

After checking in to Gasthof Simony, our one-night stay hotel at Hallstatt, We choose to take the funicular and ride up to salt mines and Welterbeblick Skywalk. The charming town is awaiting us to explore in the early morning before the tourists come in. We also spend time strolling around and going upper and outside of the Hallstatt for the best photo shooting.

A few hours of the brief visit is not enough. Of course, you have the choice of just spending several hours, taking a look or photo at this quaint European town and leaving. But Hallstatt is worth an overnight or maybe longer stay to discover this charming village.

Take a Postcard-Perfect Photo Of Hallstatt

Postcard Perfect View At Hallstatt North
The Postcard-perfect View in Hallstatt

The first come across a top thing to do at Hallstatt is to take a postcard-perfect photo of this Austria lakeside village. There are two locations for taking the postcard-perfect photo of Hallstatt, both located at the corner end of the village in the north and south. The ideal walking guide of Hallstatt is started from the north to the south end. Anyway, Hallstatt is a relatively small village and there is only probably one hour of walking journey from one end to another end.

It started on the north side. Talk a short walk toward the north corner of the town after passing the ferry station. This bending road will take you to the most breathtaking view of Hallstatt, and this is where you can take the first iconic photo you see on a postcard.

Market Square Hallstatt

From there, walk along the boardwalk and stop by the marketplace, one of the most stunning places at Hallstatt. Viewing the 16th-century Gothic building with a beautiful balcony at the historical center can be enjoyed.

Make your way along the street and stop by any souvenir shops or houses at your own pace. Take a photo of the photogenic flower-decked houses or the lively ducks and swans at the lake.

Postcard Perfect View At Hallstatt South

At the end of the walking journey, you will enter another best viewing point at the south end. This location is where you can take the second postcard-perfect photo of Hallstatt from another angle.

360-degree Panorama View At World Heritage Skywalk

Hallstatt Skywalk observation deck offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the entire Dachstein Salzkammergut region. This 350-meter high platform can be reached by 1 hour of hike or €16 of the funicular ride.

From the south viewpoint, follow the sign and walk down the road until you get to the funicular. You can purchase the funicular ride separately or together with the Salzwelten tour which is worth for visit.

Tour At Oldest Salt Mine In The World

Hallstatt Salzwelten
Salt Mines Tour

Many peoples are coming to Hallstatt for its picturesque charming village, but they don’t know the best attractions in the area are above the village. Hallstatt Salzwelten is considered some of the oldest salt mines in the world, dating back 7,000 years of history. It is also part of the reason why Hallstatt is recognized by UNESCO.

Tour at Hallstatt Salzwelten

Be prepared for an enjoyable and educational experience in the darkness. This €34 guided tour will explain the mining process and history of salt mining. There are two wooden slides and a train ride out from the tunnel which adds to the excitement of the tour. Worth a visit.

The salt mines tour is approximately 80 to 90 minutes. But please budget for at least 3 to 4 hours including the return journey of the funicular ride and a visit to Skywalk. Normally the line is extremely long, especially in summer, so please come early or book your ticket in advance if you intend to visit the Hallstatt Salt Mines.

Strolling Around Or Walk Outside Of Hallstatt

Walk Outside Of Hallstatt
Strolling Around in Hallstatt

Another best thing to do at Hallstatt is strolling around through the narrow streets and elevated upper level of the town. There is so much to explore at Hallstatt besides the lakeside walk.

Instead, you can also walk out of the village and head to Badestrand, one of the locations with stunning views of Hallstatt. With 10 minute walking journey, you can have a peaceful Hallstatt on your own.

Things Not To Do In Hallstatt

Things Not To Do In Hallstatt

Tourism is booming in this small mountain village of only 750 residents. Over 600,00 people are visiting Hallstatt per year for its stunning architecture and well-maintained landscape. But keep in mind that we are visiting other houses and communities.

That’s why it’s important to show respect.

Things Not To Do in Hallstatt:

  • No flying drone
  • No trespass on property
  • Keep your voice down

No Flying Drone: Drone is prohibited with a brunch of signs sprinkled around Hallstatt. Please be aware that Austria has the strictest laws about drones with very hefty fines. You don’t need this. Just climb up the stairs to the upper Hallstatt or take the funicular up to the Skywalk to get the beautiful panoramic view of Hallstatt.

No Trespass On Property: Show your respect to residents as people are living at Hallstatt. Don’t trespass just for a better photo.

Keep Your Voice Down: Don’t ruin the peaceful and quiet village with your high-pitched voice. Many residents have been put up a sign and hoping for visitors to lower their voices.

Hallstatt Travel Tips

Overtourism at Hallstatt

Here are some of the useful Hallstatt travel tips for planning a relaxing holiday:

  • Arrive at Hallstatt early.
  • Stay for a night in Hallstatt.
  • Wake up early.
  • Off-season trip.

Arrive at Hallstatt Early if you wish to avoid crowds. Else, consider staying at night at Hallstatt to enjoy this stunning village in the late evening or early morning before the visitors come in.

Stay For A Night at Hallstatt or nearby. Most day-trippers are arrived in the afternoon and will be leaving after spending a few hours at the market square and Seestraße.

Wake Up Early: A few hours in the morning before the arrival of day-trippers is the best time for you to explore the Hallstatt peacefully.

Off-Season Trip: Expect a large crowd and higher prices during the peak season, especially the summer holiday. If possible, avoid peak season so that you can experience the peaceful and calming European village.

Accommodation: Gasthof Simony

Hallstatt Lake View Hotel WIth Balcony
Enjoy Hallstatt Lake View

We kept debating whether to stay one night in Hallstatt or just a day trip from nearby places such as Salzburg or Bad Ischl. A day trip to Hallstatt is enough for a brief visit to this tiny town. However, you have to stay one night in Hallstatt to fully explore the beauty of the serene town when the day-tripper leaves.

Due to the size of the town, there is very limited accommodation in Hallstatt town. The price is not budget-friendly, especially for those rooms overlooking the lake. Some accommodations even required at least 2 nights’ stay if you choose to stay in Hallstatt.

Gasthof At Hallstatt

But glad that we managed to find the Gasthof Simony, a historical wooden building located in the center of Hallstatt with a panoramic view of Lake Hallstatt. A little bit rundown but consider being one of the cheapest accommodation at the center of Hallstatt with superb scenery. Most important, we managed to book a room with a lake view. The view was truly unearthly with Alpine views, especially in the morning. It was truly my best memory in my Hallstatt itinerary. So skip the day trip and go for at least an overnight trip.

Another worth recommendation is Seehotel Gruner Baum. Probably the best lakeside hotel in Hallstatt and served as scenography in many movies. Many celebrities and even Empress Sisi stayed here before. Extremely popular, so please reserve early.

Where To Stay in Hallstatt: Old Town or Obertraun

Friendly reminder, Hallstatt is a very popular tourist destination. Make sure to reserve your stay in advance if you plan to overnight at Hallstatt. Alternatively, look for accommodations in Obertraun, which is located opposite Hallstatt across the lake at a cheaper price.

What To Eat Hallstatt

What To Eat In Hallstatt
Best Food To Eat in Hallstatt

Not many choices and limited restaurants mostly located in the market square. Some of the Gasthof also served food but only until lunchtime and mostly not open during Sunday.

Elevated price for food in Hallstatt. If you have the budget, look for the restaurant at the lakeside to enjoy your meal with a great view. Don’t forget to eat fish, Hallstatt’s specialty. Hotel Seewirt Zauner served the best fish dishes in Hallstatt. They proudly serve the local fish which is freshly caught from Hallstatt Lake.

The local Gasthof restaurant like BRÄUGASTHOF and Gasthof Zauner also served traditional local dishes in a nice environment.

Hallstatt Cheap Eat
Hallstatt Cheap Eat

Alternatively, look for Maik’s Heisse Hutte, a small cabin located at the Hallstatt Markt that served street food like kebab, hamburgers, and fries at a cheaper price. But don’t expect too much from the food.

We had our lunch in this budget place during our visit to Hallstatt. We ordered the Wiener schnitzel and a beer. The food was not too bad and we enjoyed the food. Couldn’t have asked for more for this price at Hallstatt.

Best Time To Visit Hallstatt

Hallstatt Lake View

We visited Hallstatt at the beginning of April, not yet the peak season but unfortunately, we also miss the chance to explore the Dachstein Krippenstein’s Giant Ice Cave and Five Finger. I would suggest coming at the end of April or the beginning of May. It should be the best time to visit Hallstatt when everything opens.

There are so many things to do and see at Hallstatt, for sure a few hours for a brief visit with only a one-day itinerary in Hallstatt may not be enough. The charming village, Salzwelten salt mine with Welterbeblick Skywalk, Dachstein Krippenstein with Giant Ice Cave and Five Finger, which easily need to spend at least one or two nights stay at Hallstatt.

Hallstatt Still Worth To Visit?

Last but not least, I hope my little guide can help you plan your perfect one-day Hallstatt itinerary. Seriously, Hallstatt is one of my favorite places during my Europe trip. Despite the large crowd, Hallstatt is very charming. We choose to stay in the lake view front room with slightly expensive but it was worth it. The view is superb breathtaking and unforgettable when you are viewing it barefoot on the room’s balcony. Travel smart and you are actually can escape from the tourist crowds.

If you have any questions, let me know in the comment. I will try my best to answer you. Thanks for reading my post on how to plan your one-day Hallstatt itinerary. Happy travels to Hallstatt!

Located at Šatlavská alley, krčma v šatlavské ulici is a reconstructed renaissance building with two minutes walk from the Municipal Square. It is also conveniently located about 3-minutes walk from our accommodation in Cesky Krumlov, Apartment Soukenicka 44. So it is very easy to get to Krcma v Satlavske ulici.

This tavern restaurant is relatively small with only a cater capacity of 80 seats inside. Alternatively, you can choose to sit outside of the terrace with about 40 seats if inside is full.

Reserved Ahead To Avoid Disappoint

Reservation at Krcma v Satlavske Ulici

Krcma v Satlavske Ulici is extremely busy especially dinner time. Many people were turned down due to the table was fully booked. So make sure to make reservation ahead to avoid disappointment.

My dinner was reserved one month earlier before my Cesky Krumlov trip.

Unique Medieval Tavern Dining Experience

Krcma v Satlavske Ulici

Prepare for a wonderful dining experienced in a unique medieval tavern atmosphere.

The typical old vaulted ceilings like in a cellar, not to mention the open flame in the middle with fresh meat is seasoned heavily and grilled over on it.

All this makes you feel like stepped back in time to the Medieval feast in a cave with a burly man cooking up the meat in a roaring open fire.

What To Order At Krcma v Satlavske Ulici

Krcma v Satlavske Ulici Environment

We were seated inside with a stylish wooden round table and wrought iron candlesticks holder in the middle. The waiters were madly busy but doing their best to serve us promptly as they can.

Menu comes with many choices from fish, pasta, and meats, but what everyone comes here for the meat platters. We ordered the onion soup as a starter, salad, meat platter for two and roasted pork knuckle.

Wood Burning Grill

Krcma v Satlavske Ulici With Open Flame At Middle

Table service was prompt and efficient with Czech beers ordered comes quickly. It was very refreshing after we spend A Perfect Day At Cesky Krumlov.

The staff seemed to be enjoying themselves. All of them busy prepared the meal into the huge wood-burning grill where most of the meat was cooked.

We cheers happily when the food served as the food portion was so HUGE!

Huge Portion Yet Delicious

Garlic Soup

Firstly popular garlic soup was served as a starter in a bread bowl. It was super helpful to warm up our bodies in the cold weather. And it tastes good too!

Salad

Nevertheless, beetroot salad served was very refreshing and greatly help not overwhelmed by the meat.

Roasted Pork Knuckle

Next, roasted pork knuckle was perfectly cooked with most of the fat had rendered down. We specifically like the pork knuckle as the skin was roasted crispy yet well succulent meat. This was no doubt the best pork knuckle that I have ever tasted.

Meat Platter

While the meat platter was served on a wooden block with big juicy pieces of chicken, pork and beef. It comes together with baked potatoes, salad, potato pancakes, coupled with dark mustard and horseradish sauce. The meat was well marinated, very flavorful, tender and juicy. Super delicious!

Everything was so delicious and we could barely finish the meal. Huge portion yet delicious.

Cesky Krumlov Best Food

Leave your diet at the door as Krcma v Satlavske Ulici worth it. Good food, nice environment, and friendly staff.

We read about some bad reviews from TripAdvisor on their rude service and poor quality food. Although this may be true as Krcma v Satlavske Ulici are superb busy with massive customer. But our dining at Krcma v Satlavske Ulici was very pleasant.

All in all, we highly recommend Krcma v Satlavske Ulici one of the best restaurants served with Cesky Krumlov’s best food. We loved the atmosphere, the food, the beer, and the service. It was fun watching the meat being cooked on the grill in front of you. However, queue always outside so do make a reservation to avoid disappointment.

No need to plan much of an itinerary but just wandering around and learning about some of its hidden secrets is the best thing you can do at Cesky Krumlov.

Climb Up To The Highest View Point, Castle Tower

Castle Tower

Standing on the hillside of the Castle District, Castle Tower is the tallest building in Cesky Krumlov with 162 stories of the staircase. It was the symbol of the town, its history, and its beauty.

To access the castle tower, you will be required to buy the admission ticket of 250 CZK which bundles together with the Castle Museum. But the view of this lovely town and its vicinity from the castle tower is so delightful and worth paying for the visit.

Colorful Painted Castle Courtyard

Proceed to the main area of the castle distinct after the visit to the castle tower. Don’t miss the visit to Cesky Krumlov Castle, the second largest castle in the Czech Republic. Reward Yourself With Trdelnik

Trdelnik - Best Street Food in Cesky Krumlov

Treat yourself with a Trdelnik after a long hour castle walk. Trdelnik is one of the street food in the Czech Republic and is known made for tourists. While a bit overpriced, I couldn’t resist grabbing another one after I tried it in Prague.

This sweet pastry is so tasty and refreshing especially added the ice cream topping. The dough is wrapped cylinder around a spindle and continuously rotated over an open flame until cooked in golden brown color. You can easily find Trdelnik the Old Town street but the one most famous is sold at MLS Crepe Bistro.

While we had a total of 4 people, so the duplex department with 3 single beds and 1 double bed fulfills our need can up to 5 people. It was well equipped with a blend of modern elements, hardwood floors, and wood-beamed ceilings. We enjoyed our cozy stay here and truly feel at home. Besides this, Apartment Soukenicka 44 also has a smaller room to cater for 2 to 3-person travelers. Take a look if you need more information.

What To Eat in Cesky Krumlov

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from for their delicious Czech cruise. Here are some highly recommended restaurants that I have visited during my trip to this wonderful town:

Krcma v Satlavske Ulici

Krčma v šatlavské Ulici: Most famous tavern restaurant with a super unique dining experience with delicious food. This little tavern restaurant will make you feel like stepped back in time to the Medieval feast in a cave with a burly man cooking up the meat in a roaring open fire in the middle. You will enjoy your dining here which is filled with delicious smelling meat and loved every bit of the atmosphere it created. A huge portion yet delicious. However, make sure to reserve a table, especially for dinner!

We are having a medieval feast at Krcma v Satlavske Ulici with great food, nice beer, and a unique tavern atmosphere.

Crepe And Trdelink at MLS Bistro

MLS Bistro: Probably the best restaurant for brunch, light lunch, and tea break in town. Try their delicious sweet crepe with a cup of nice coffee. This cozy place and nice atmosphere is your option for your breakfast or afternoon tea. You can choose to dine in or take away for their famous crepe or Trdelink.

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Seafood Hot Pot

Jeju Must Eat: Samseonghyeol Haemultang Seafood Pot

Last updated on April 27th, 2024

Jeju must eat, Samseonghyeol Haemultang served the best seafood hot bowl with fresh and live seafood in Jeju island.

When you come to Jeju, you will want to try their fresh seafood. Seafood is served fresh and cheap in Jeju. Haemultang is a Korean spicy seafood stew filled with an abundance of fresh seafood in a hot bowl with entire octopus, mussels, abalones, scallops, clams, crab! The most shocking part at Jeju, it was served live.

A bowl of haemultang, traditional Korean spicy seafood stew is very popular at Jeju, thanks to its wide variety of delicious shellfish and other seafood freshly caught from the ocean.

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Restaurant

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Restaurant

Samseonghyeol Haemultang located in the residential area of Yeon-dong but still managed to accumulate a huge number of returning customers due to its popularity.

There is a car park area to park your vehicle opposite the restaurant.

We arrived at Samseonghyeol Haemultang restaurant around 7 p.m. and ask to wait for about 10 minutes before seated.

How To Order At Samseonghyeol Haemultang

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Menu

The menu is only in Korean and Chinese, probably the target customer are Chinese who love shell food so much compare with western. The major foods on the menu are the live seafood hot pot in small, medium and large, size relating to how many are in your party and abalone slices.

The set comes with a pack of noodles with some vegetables but you still can add on rice or noodles for a little extra. But we advise you see on the portion first before add on any side.

Price listed during our visit at 2019 May:

  • Super Large (5 person): ₩80,000
  • Large (4 person): ₩70,000
  • Medium (3 person): ₩60,000
  • Small (2 person): ₩50,000

We ordered the famous Haemultang in the smallest portion for 2 people at ₩50,000.

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Seafood Hot Pot

Our bowl of haemultang came to us very quickly and we were so amazed and shocked when the food served. It looked grand with a mountain of shellfish, abalone, scallops, and crabs with an octopus squirming on top and a large portion of bean shoots at the bottom.

The portion is so huge even for the smallest pot. It probably can cater for 4 people for the small one. The seafood hot pot is cooked in front of you and we felt a little cruel while waiting.

The live octopus and abalone were still alive and moving, still tried its best to wriggle out from the heated pot.

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Service

The staffs were very attentive, occasionally came to take care of our hot pot to make sure the food was well cooked. They were helping to get rid of the shells, removed the inedible parts, cutting up the octopus and abalone into pieces so it would cook quicker.

The soup was slightly on the bland side, but become very mouth-watering after the seafood cooked through. It won’t be very spicy with the sweetness of vegetables and seafood. Probably a little spicier will even better.

Add Noodles At The End

Samseonghyeol Haemultang Noodles

Be sure don’t drink too much on the soup, a pack of instant noodles and some greens which come together with the set will be added at the end.

The noodles will absorb the essence of seafood and become super delicious seafood noodle. It was an incredible way to end the meal. We try our best but it was too full and can’t finish the food. If seafood is not your thing, I don’t recommend trying this restaurant.

For seafood lovers, I am sure you will fall in love with their seafood hot pot. It’s cheap and delicious for such a huge bowl of fresh seafood.
